Kelley School standard admit: course strategy, high school and freshman year

Hello I can’t find this info anywhere and I know its been discussed before…
I am a current junior at an Indiana High School. I won’t have the gpa for DA to Kelley (3.6) so I am going to strategize for standard admit. I am setting up my courses for my senior year of high school.
I plan on taking W131, K201, finite math m118 and possibly calc. survey m119. All will transfer to IU.
so I need more info about the classes I should take freshman year at IUB before I apply to Kelley.

I’m quite confused about the icore, and what that means as well as would like advice on what easier classes and professors I should take during my freshman year to help ensure I don’t drop to a B-
also does anyone know if the grades I get in HS are counted or is it just the course? I know I have to take a test in the spring in HS in order to get the IU credits.

can anyone speak about the calculus requirements? I know I have to take a calc placement test after I get admitted. could this mean I need to repeat m119??
thanks
SP

I’ve never heard of taking K201 in high school but remember if those are ACP classes that they will count towards your GPA so you will need to do good in them. If they aren’t ACP they don’t count towards your GPA but the grades still show up on your transcript so still do good.

There is plenty of schedule advice on here, if you can’t find any click on my name. I asked a similar question last year.

You don’t have to worry about icore until you are a junior.

Since you would have a lot of the first year classes out of the way you have more room to take more business classes. Of the top of my head I would recommend a first semester schedule of:
BUS A 100 - Accounting (1 credit)
BUS C 104 - Business Presentations (3 credits)
Language Class (3 Credits)
Gen Ed (3 Credits) You can find some very easy one to take.
ECON 201 - Microeconomics (3 Credits) I would recommend taking AP Economics if you can next year. ECON 201 can screw up plans. If not try to take it at Ivy Tech over the summer.

You won’t have to repeat calc if you complete M119. Placement test is just for determining what your skill level is in math.

If they are AP classes, the grades don’t matter for college, but ACP grades do count for college.

I would review the standard admit requirements and check out the grade distribution database:

https://kelley.iu.edu/Ugrad/Admissions/CurrentIU/page39067.html

http://gradedistribution.registrar.indiana.edu/

Personal strengths/weaknesses are important when choosing classes since most of the early ones are relatively similar in terms of difficulty. If you are great at math, the math classes are very easy, but if you aren’t, they can be challenging. Same goes for the other subjects.

thanks for all the great replies. Yes the course at my HS are ACP. So I should be focusing on grades for sure! in my case the “K201 course” at my HS translates to an Ivy tech course which translate to the K201 course…

the suggestion to I take AP Economics, will this fulfill my Econ 201 credit? (obviously not the grade)
thanks again

oops didn’t finish my thought

regarding the suggestion above to take AP Economics, will this fulfill my Econ 201 credit? (obviously not the grade) do I need to get a 4 or 5 on exam?
I guess Im confused about how/when to take the course below… I think I will have the 30 min credits to be able to apply for Semester 2 of my freshman year admittance. (I will have 18 credits from HS alone) If that is my goal can someone help me with the courses needed in semester 1 (or before IU) in order to meet this goal and apply.

Make sure I’m understanding this…it says, “completion of 12 hours from the following courses on IU campus”…BUS K201 or BUS K303. If i take BUS K201 in HS then I need to take BUS K303 at IU?

here are the requirements from website for reference…
Completion of a minimum of 30 hours of college course work. For most students, this will require two semesters on the IU Bloomington campus. We include the credits from any college-level course work on your transcript.

Completion of at least 12 credit hours from the following courses on the IU Bloomington campus:
BUS-K 201 or BUS-K 303

Choose one additional option from this list:
ENG-W 131*, BUS-C 104, BUS-C 204, BUS-L 201, or BUS-G202 AND BUS-D270

Choose two additional options from this list:
BUS-A 201, BUS-A 202, ECON-E 201, ECON-E 202, MATH-M 118, MATH-M 119, ECON-E 370*, OR BUS-A 100 AND BUS-G 202

  1. You should only need a C in the K201 class if it will turn into Ivy Tech transfer credit, but obviously try not to cut it too close.
  2. AP Micro does fulfill Econ 201. AP Macro also fulfills Econ 202 You need at least a 4 to get credit for each.

  1. I believe you are reading it correctly about taking K303 on campus. K303 is very easy though, so it's probably a good idea to take anyway.
  2. I think you are right that you could apply to Kelley after your first semester if you are coming in with 18 credits, but I would verify with Kelley to make sure: https://kelley.iu.edu/Ugrad/Contact/page39684.html
  3. Assuming you can apply to Kelley after 1 semester, I think the easiest schedule would be what I have at the bottom. K303 and C104 are both very easy to get at least a B in, so I would keep those 2 for sure. Stats also has a great grade distribution. I would also add T175 - Compass. It is a blowoff class and nice to get over with. The last class depends on what you do with econ. E202 and G202 both have E201 as a prereq, and A100 is a prereq to A201 and A202. That limits your options for choosing another class in the last group down to just E201 unless you come in with E201 credit. E201 is doable to get a B in, but some students struggle with it.

You basically have 4 options the way I see it:

  1. Don't take any AP Econ and take E201 at IU
  2. Take AP Micro in high school but don't take the AP exam, making E201 at IU easier - probably the easiest option, but requires the most effort
  3. Take AP Macro in high school and take the AP exam, probably making E201 at IU easier
  4. Take AP Micro in high school and then take E202 at IU - probably the hardest option

You could also mix and match if you took both AP econs next year, but I wouldn’t take both AP tests because then you would have to take A100 and G202. A100 can be difficult if you don’t have prior accounting knowledge.

This is probably super confusing, so let me know if you have any questions about any of it!

Schedule:

K303 - 3 credits
C104 - 3 credits
STAT-S 301 (substitute for E370 - most people take this one) - 3 credits
E201 - 3 credits
T175 - 1.5 credits

Thank you for all that advice I will digest it and ask questions if I have then

@Thisisstest101 just and FYI, my D is a HS Senior and currently taking W131 and P155, I was talking to her last week about her W131 class. She is enjoying it and doing well but she said there were a lot of kids in her class who are getting “C”'s on their assignments where before they always got "A"s and are somewhat in a panic.

Her thinks they approached it more like a HS class and not a college class and are not putting in the right level of effort. Just don’t fall into a trap like some of her friends who thought the ACP in HS was going to be an easier class. Make sure you plan your schedule to allow you to put in the right effort to do well to help you with your plan.

I would honestly take AP Econ in HS and take the AP exams for both micro and macro. Why would you take those classes then not take the exam? Reap the benefits of your hard work! If you receive a 4 on either test, you will get credit for Econ 202 and/ Econ 201. Those are both very tough classes at IU. If you receive a 3 on the exam, then I suggest taking the needed classes at Ivy Tech or some other community college.

@paddlemom3 The OP could do that, but would then have to take G202 and A100 first semester. It’s definitely doable but it’s likely harder to get a B or above in both of those rather than just E201.
