I just wanted to share my experience as a non-direct admit business freshman at IU. Getting into Kelley is not hard, if you’re willing to work for it and I was just admitted. A little background: HS GPA was only 2.9. These were my grades in College so far:
Fall 2015:
BUS-A100 : A
MATH-M118: A
ECON-E201: B+
SPH-I117: A
SPH-H180: A
PSY-P101: A+
CSCI-A110: A+
Spring 2016:
BUS-K201: A
BUS-C104: A
BUS-G202: A-
BUS-T175: A-
SPH-I113: A
SPH-H174: A+
Current IU GPA (Cumulative): 3.9
So, I had a poor high school record but achieved great success at IU just by staying sober and working. Not more than 3 hours of focussed work in a day was required to achieve this. Don’t be scared of Kelley admissions. Just work for it.
I’d also like to point out that 3 hours per day in college is not necessarily as much as it seems either. In high school, you’re in school for about 7 hours a day and 5 days a week, which = 35 hours a week + any time spent outside of school. In college, the average person is only in class for around 13 hours a week (at IU, 1 credit hour = about 5/6 of an hour in class). Even if you do outside work for 3 hours every day, that’s only 21 hours a week, which adds up to 34 hours per week, or less time spent on school than only the time you spent physically at school, in high school.
The key is to make sure you set aside that time outside of class because you have the freedom to do whatever you want. Nobody is going to force you to work, and there are plenty of distractions like alcohol.
hard work beats all. I went from a 2.2 gpa in high school => 3.6 gpa at community college after 2 years => 3.72 GPA after my first year at IU which got me into Kelley. It’s never too late to turn things around.
