Hi CC, so I contacted the KWH a while ago and talked to the director of recruitment and sent her some writing samples. She said she would review them at a later date, I thanked her and that was the last contact we had. She said she would be reviewing them “soon”, and that was on January 20th. I really would like to have the support of the KWH in the admissions office while my app is being reviewed. Should I email her again and ask her if she’s had time to review them yet, or wait a while?
There’s no harm in asking her if she reviewed your samples and what she thought of them. Isn’t that part of her job in “recruiting”? You may have seen a previous thread in CC regarding the impact a “positive” review may have on admissions. In case you haven’t it he link is http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/15455426/#Comment_15455426
I have seen the thread, and it is one of the primary reasons I contacted Jamie-Lee. I guess I will email her again…if I get rejected I’ll always regret not emailing her.
Does anyone know when the KWH is sending letters/emails? I was told this morning I’m in the group that’s getting an email, but I’m not sure if it’s the recruitment email or the “we told admissions you reached out to us” email. Could anyone elaborate please?
@DL43516: You were contacted today by KWH? Paste the email text below; only then we’ll be able to tell.
Does it say you are ‘candidate of significant interest’?
Also, you first sent samples, then they didn’t reply for quite long, and then you again sent an email inquiring about that right? If so, I too should email them asking when they’ll reply.
Yeah, I just asked her if she’d had time to read my submissions and she said:
“What great timing for your note. I have indeed reviewed your writing recently and I have made sure that Admissions knows we’re in touch. This will be part of the conversation when they review your application in the coming weeks. Thanks for checking in and I wish you the best!”
Now I’m just waiting for the official email to see if I’m being recruited or if she just told them we’re in touch. I know what she said but if she read my submissions…idk, maybe it’s just false hope.
^^For what it’s worth, when my friend was recruited when the lady told her that she marked her as “a candidate of significant interest” in her application file and that it would be part of the discussion to admit her. So if she tells you that you got a positive mark in your file then you got recruited.
She also told my friend that this marking did not mean an automatic in. My friend was later accepted ED though.
@collegeapps2k14 thanks for you help! But what I’m worried about is that she didn’t say anywhere that I was marked as a “candidate of significant interest”. She simply said she told them we were in touch. Apparently, there are two types of letters you can get? That’s what it seems like in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-pennsylvania/1579753-kelly-writers-house-p1.html . But the email she sent me was just a response to me asking her if she’d read my pieces. Could you clarify if possible? I’m just really confused on where I stand.
Sorry, but I don’t know much about this process. I’m not a writer and I only heard about KWH through my friend! I assume that if she reminds you that it’s not an automatic in then they wrote something positive in your file.
Worst comes to worst, they didn’t recruit you, BUT she did say that she recorded your conversation with the admissions office. Penn doesn’t count demonstrated interest but how couldn’t it help that a student is motivated enough to reach out to the school? Probably only looks positively on you.
I agree. It doesn’t sound like you were “recruited” but it shows that you were interested enough to be in contact with them and that you were proactive. It can only help your application.
@Lawstreet: I got the generic ‘we’ll let admissions know we’re touch’ (i.e, Thanks for applying and all, but you aren’t being recruited).
My friend got the recruitment aka positive email. It doesn’t mention candidate of significant interest (they’ve discontinued saying that I think), but it clearly says- ‘we feel strongly about your candidacy and writing. This will be part of the context of your application. Admission committee knows of your contact with us and of our support to your candidacy’. So yeah, that’s that.
has someone gotten any other type of email?
@betterthanbest I have always heard that there are only two versions of the letter so it would be interesting to see if anyone received a third version. Was your friend in touch with kwh over a long period of time?
Has anyone ever received a recruiting letter and not been accepted?
@desie1: Yeah. Actually, I doubt there’s a third version; it is pretty clear that I got the general version and my friend got the recruitment one.
My friend contacted KWH some time in last week of Jan 2015, so not a long period of time (I contacted them before him).
A lot of people who receive the recruitment email are rejected. I don’t have the stats right now, but I recall above 35% of recruited people end up being accepted. I even asked the lady that if I’m not recruited, does that mean I’ll be rejected? She explicitly said that it has no correlation in this case.
Did you receive any email? If so, of what sort? Though it seems like this time we have to email the the lady asking if she’s read the samples and what she thought of them, and after that, she tells you if you’ve been recruited or not
