Okay so I’m Jewish and applying to Kent. I was wondering if they ask anything about church since it’s an episcopal school. I’m very frightened about applying to a christian school as a Jew. I’m not that religious at all, so I don’t mind, but I’m scared they will care. Any help?
They won’t care at all. We just had an interview there recently and they did not ask about it at all.
Like @KateKara24 said, they will npt care one bit At All. Good luck with the interview, you will do fine!
I would go even further and say that they would welcome questions from you if you are interested in learning about support they would offer for practicing your Jewish faith. Any of these schools welcome the diversity. (My child isn’t at Kent, but is at Episcopal, so I speak from that experience.)
While Kent or similar schools wouldn’t care at all and would try (I’m sure) to be welcoming, I do think you should consider whether or not you’d want to be at a school where you are one of very few Jewish students. If you currently live in a place where there are very few of you and you are comfortable with that, I would imagine going to a school like Kent would be fine; but if you are used to being around lots of other Jewish folks, you might feel out of place.
I really don’t care to be with other jews, I go to a mainly catholic public school so I don’t think it would be much different. I also don’t really observe. It’s mostly about spending time with people I love.
@lilyesh Every single school we visited last year that had a Christian heritage made a point of saying that all faiths are totally represented. So truly – it’s not an issue. Have a great interview!
The better ones are that way. And Kent is one of those better ones.
However, not all schools with a Christian heritage are that way. The schools I’m thinking of pay lip service to being inclusive, and they like to admit a few Jewish students for that purpose, but they really aren’t that welcoming. (I have a couple of specific BSs in mind, but they’re rarely mentioned here.)
When you’re non-Christian, you notice these things.
Not an issue. And it wasn’t more than 30 years ago when my husband interviewed there. P.S. Is oldest friend is a board member. Again, not an issue
I had a bunch of Jewish friends at Kent 40 years ago. Many of us envied their choice of a relatively brief service on Friday nights vs. the long chapel service on Sunday morning but other than that the kids were just kids and the student body was no more religious than at any other school. Kent is accepting of all faiths. My son graduated in '17 and it seemed the same to me.
