Lol, all I know is that you were going on and on about how if you got into A/E you/your dad would make you go…and all that other crap. I just don’t get how you changed your mind so quickly. Did you not think there was a possibility of getting more FA from Kent?

italianboarder, what was your impression of the Hotchkiss SAT prep courses and college guidance program (assuming you looked)? In what ways and degrees are the Kent courses and program better than those of Hotchkiss?

I changed my mind because the one person I didn’t focus on needed to be heard. It was all about what I wanted and my parents… We forgot about my little brother who said that he wanted to go in two years maybe… He talked to me privately and told me that we probably can’t afford that.

I want to go to Andover. I would pick it over Kent in a heartbeat. I actually didn’t make the call to tell them I wouldn’t attend, because I just felt ****ed at my dad that I had to make the choice. He sent the email and he told me I was sorry. He took it pretty bad for a few days… But we talked it out.

I did realize one thing… The gap between Andover and Kent isn’t as big as I thought it would be and I don’t think it will be as much of a sacrifice. Kent will be more willing to cater to my needs and take care of me because I got a merit scholarship and I’m probably going to be a top student at Kent(more so than at Andover or Hotchkiss).

I’m realizing that my chances at going to a great school are a step above what they are now at Kent. I think I’ll find a great experience honestly.

At Hotchkiss ALOT of focus was placed on 10 schools. Columbia, Georgetown, Trinity, Bowdoin and U pen were the “Hotchkiss” colleges. I really wanted to ask, “What about the kids that don’t go to those schools?”. One kid said he honestly felt more pressure from the school than from his parents to apply to liberal schools in the NE instead of UVA and Emory like he wanted.

Hotchkiss doesn’t do much prep outside of class, but Hotchkiss had a more rigid english class for freshies and sophs. Kent gives you the option to take a more specialized class sophomore year. Maybe HK covers SAT in some of the English classes?

I loved the fact that Kent sits with you at the beginning of the year and you make a list over two weeks. They get you “contacts” that went to Kent at those schools and then they work with what you have done and what you can do that can get your foot in the door a little bit more soundly.

At Hotchkiss they have all of these existing ideas for you I guess… At Kent they will set a personal goal because that time is built into the schedule. SAT prep is built into the schedule. I saw a few HK students with SAT prep books that hadn’t been opened at all. Kent builds it into the schedule so you don’t have to take the responsibility on yourself outside of class.

Kent told me they would personally set plans for my specific goals. They would help me carry out the goal as best that they can. That is the personal care that makes me happy about Kent, it is one bonus that could probably be found at other schools… BUT I"M GLAD THAT KENT HAS IT.

Ahh I guess in short, Kent is more nurturing than the more competitive environment of Hotchkiss/Andover.
