Hello,
Could you guys please comment on Kenyon College. Im an international student and applied to HYPM, rejected by them and accepted almost full ride at Kenyon. Thing is I do not know much about the college in terms of reputation ( i applied mainly because of my family), so I would like to hear the opinions of usa students/parents who would/should know better. I have the option of staying one more year in my native country to complete my secondary education and maybe try again next year ( i have not completed my eduction, being in 12th grade in a 13 year school), but the truth is I would like to leave. My only concern is to what extend will Kenyon meet my expectations (a highly rated and respected college, with lots of opportunities and an atmosphere comparable with the IVYs, where academic excellence is valued above everything).

PS: Ive checked the site and the sub forum here, I would just like to hear some honest opinions.

The problem with most liberal arts schools is that they have little name recognition. If this doesn't bother you and your parents can afford the school, I'm sure you would have a great experience.

that is exactly my problem - it bothers me. But there are no guaranties that I will be accepted by any big names next year. This is the main reason I am trying to find more information on Kenyon and is what guided me into creating this thread

Kenyon is a Great school. I know a number of graduates from there and DD2 will be looking at it soon. At one time they had the foremost magazine of letters (basically published literature) in the US. Very good classical liberal arts education. Great swim teams. It is out by itself (very small town that exists only for the college) but is close to Columbus OH with lots of things to do.

The random person on the street may not know Kenyon, but it's highly respected in higher education. As Erin's Dad says, a small place in a small town in the middle of nowhere, but 45 minutes from Columbus. It's a giant in literary circles - E.L. Doctorow once famously said "Poetry was what we did at Kenyon, the way they did football at Ohio State." Theatre is also big there. It's considered one of the most beautiful small colleges in America.

Poetry is my passion and this is why my parents directed me to Kenyon, but I am planning on studying Physics. Ive heard that their physics department is very good but I am not 100% positive it will get me in the top graduate schools I would like to attend, and this is what concerns me most.

I attended the young writers' workshop at Kenyon. Many of the young writers who I was with applied and were accepted at Kenyon. They truly are intelligent individuals and talented writers. Kenyon is absolutely stunning. The moment you step foot on Middle Path will definitely be something you remember for the rest of your life. Newsweek named Kenyon one of the 25 hottest colleges in the nation two years ago. Along with English, Kenyon is also strong in the sciences and theatre. Kenyon is amazing... except the food.

"and the world is desperately short on poet-physicists"

hahahaha yeah, it sure is.
Thank you for your input, I think I will be attending.
You can be sure I want to hear more opinions though, so keep them coming.

I visited Kenyon last year and loved it! But it is known as a writer's/English school. Ralph Nader knows where it is! haha! (I learned that on my visit!) Anyway, its a great school, beautiful campus.

It's a great school, and I really wouldn't worry about not being accepted to grad school; as others have said, it definitely is known throughout higher education. Congrats on getting in!
