Not a fair comparison… How could it be…? She hasn’t visited Oberlin. It’s that simple. Have to agree with NJNYvt…you can not commit to attending without having first visited…particularly if you have been accepted to and like a school that you have visited.
Have to add…go back in this chain and reread daisychain… Have to agree with her post as we have visited Oberlin twice and son spent 2 weeks on campus last year…We agree with her post describing life/people/town/vibe and academics at Oberlin. Our S will be attending O over Kenyon… (Side note: he didn’t get a chance to visit Kenyon)…Like your D… He was offered merit from Oberlin. He describes O campus as friendly, accepting, politically aware v intelligent diverse and liberal…Of course, easy for a stranger to suggest you fly out or drive and make the visit…perhaps they will give you another few extra days to do so and decide in a more informed way…if you explain this dilemma . Good Luck
Congrats!
Now that she’s going to Kenyon… any chance she could start a push to get the mascot/team name changed to the Marathoners?
Glad she’s satisfied…! Godspeed !
I liked #19. It does seem that there are some schools that really should be visited. In an ideal world of course all schools on a list would be visited – not once but twice – but Oberlin does sound like one where fit is more of an all-or-nothing situation. Kenyon is really lovely and your D will find her place there. Congrats again.
@prezbucky , please elaborate?
Get it?
Kenyon (Kenyan) Marathoners
Aha! Got it
(I was in a pretty playful/goofy mood last night…)
I was thinking it referred to the OP’s college process . . . .
Whew! Didn’t see this thread until the decision to stick with Kenyon was confirmed, and I got nervous there for a bit.
I, too, think Kenyon sounded like a better fit for you DD; regardless, without an opportunity to visit Oberlin before committing, I think it was smart to rule it out.
One thing I learned, having visited several selective LACs with my son, is that you REALLY need to visit before committing (unless one is offering you enough need-based aid that it’s a slam-dunk regardless). I love everything about SLACs and was headed to one myself back in the day until I visited and was completely turned off. My son really wanted one too, but out of the seven or eight we visited, only one really wowed either of us. (Sadly, he was denied there.) He was accepted and waitlisted at a couple he never got a chance to visit, but we never would have considered any of them seriously without having visited first. They’re just too small and with very specific vibes to risk that unless you have no other choices.
Well, I can’t see anymore nerve-wracking updates coming. Carelton emailed to say they are very doubtful they will take anyone off the waitlist, and Bates has already been calling people. Not so sure she would go there now, anyway. But will she take herself off the lists? No, because she is a fatalist 8-|
