Kenyon Travel Grant

Hi you guys! It's the first time i'm posting around here, but I just wanted to say that today, I got a letter telling me that I am recieving a travel grant to Kenyon (after applying for it of course). I am thinking of going next month --February, sometime. Do you guys have any suggestions to whether I should go look at something or do something in particular? My letter also included that an interview would be in my schedule. Goodness gracious...my first college interview!! What tips do you have for me?

PS: I'm coming from NYC so this aught to be exciting!

hmmmm..... lets see. well this all depends on whether you're staying overnight or not. I'm going to assume that you are. (in no particular order)
1. Be sure to visit the KAC. It's amazing.
2. Go to middle ground and buy something...anything.
3. Don't be shy. Talk to as many students as you can.
4. Don't buy a market dog some students are boycotting them. Long story short they used to cost 50 cents and now they cost 75.
5. Don't go to sleep before 2 am. Go find something to do with students. I watched Lion King with a bunch of people and had a lot of fun.
6. Don't draw conclusions from the college's surroundings. It seriously is bordered on all sides by cornfields but the campus itself is amazingly beautiful.
7. Sit in on an interesting class like Quest for Justice, not a typical course like Calc. Also don't be afraid to contribute to the class discussion.
8. Turn your cell phone off and let yourself "feel out" the campus. You'll know if it's right for you. That sounds really corny, but I'm serious.

oh pleeeease dont worry about the interview. I am a Kenyon student now and i visited on a travel grant, I was so worked up about it, mine was with a senior. She was amazing and actually wanted me to ask questions. I brought a sort of resume showing what I do... I dont know if I should have. So pretty much its low key, nothing drastic. Also dont draw conclusions from just our host, because chances are he/she is a small fraction of the types of people at Kenyon...

Thanks kamscnerd and musaka06! That was really helpful. But Musaka06, you're kind of making me wonder whether I should bring a resume too. I don't think I will, because I doubt i'll have enough time to do so! But thank you both!! Does anyone else have anything to say?

i didn't bring a resume but I sent one with my app.

Ooh...I forgot to mention that i'm a junior, so i'm starting early. I guess that's why I feel kind of anxious about having my first interview and all!! I think i'll most likely make up a resume before my senior year like what you all said. That's a real good idea! I'm actually thinking of bringing my camera to keep a good sense of what the campus was like.

As far as a resume, you don't need one. I think the app asks for a list of activities/awards, but that's about it. As far as market dogs go, the boycott is ridiculous. The market had been selling them at a loss for years and finally decided to raise the price. Buy one anyway, they're spectacular.

As far as the interview goes:

I had an interview over the summer, and I asked beforehand whether I should bring anything or not, and I the admissions people told me it wasn't at all necessary. The interview is really informal and relaxing, especially compared to other colleges. They really did their best to make it comfortable, and it was really easy and (kind of almost) fun.

OOh...I have another important question. Is the interview more evaluative or informative? Please let me know as soon as you can. Thanks!

PS: I'm going to go on Sunday 11th thru Monday the 12th.

Its a little bit of both I suppose. My interview seemed very informal. I went in semi-formal dress and then felt very overdressed by the end. The questions my interviewer asked were mostly simple things like what I did in my free time and what books i read. Be prepared to answer the most important question, which is why Kenyon is right for you and vice versa. That seems to be very important to the admissions staff at Kenyon, possibly more so than at other schools. This year a record was set in number of applications and they want to accept fewer students than last year. They need to know that Kenyon is a top choice for you. By the way, I got accepted yesterday. WOHOO! Good luck. =)

Oh my gosh kamscnerd!!! Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you! You must be sooooo relieved, right?~ Thanks for your advice. I'm going to have to give really good thought to why I want to go to Kenyon.....

When I did an interview, I felt like my interviewer was trying almost TOO hard to make me feel comfortable. It was my first college interview, too, so it was very welcoming. I don't think you will need to take a resume or anything, just relax and don't be shy.
