Kenyon vs, Hamilton?

I'm currently finalizing my college list and for my reaches, I'm stuck between Kenyon and Hamilton. I plan on double majoring in English and Foreign Languages. I know both schools are excellent for writers, but what about their language departments? I'm a senior with a 3.8 GPA (lowered due to stress at home) and my SATs are as follows:
CR: 690
MATH: 500
WRITING: 660

Which school would be a better fit for me and have better language offerings? Thanks!

Most college students don’t have the time or ability to learn more than two languages really well. English courses and general education requirements will eat up a lot of your courses. Which languages are most interesting to you? One college may be stronger in those languages than the other.

Your math score is extremely low for both schools. Have you considered a retake and prepped for the math portion?

This is pretty easy to find out: go on each college’s website and look at the course offerings for the languages. That should give you a picture of the depth and breadth of offerings. Also look and see if the departments host events, opportunities to meet and speak the language outside of class, etc.

I don’t expect either school will admit you with your SAT scores, honestly, unless you have some other hook. You math is 100 points under the 25% mark for Kenyon, and 160 points below Hamliton. You are also below 50% in Writing at both. If you definitely plan to apply to one, your odds are slightly better at Kenyon because your scores are a bit closer to what they are looking for.

The other point about Hamilton and Kenyon is that they attract a lot of students interested in writing, so you will be competing against them as well.

Have you considered Susquehanna University? They have a Department of English and Creative Writing, as well as a Modern Languages department.

You might have a better chance of admission there than at Kenyon or Hamilton.

Not to pile on, but I think admission to either is extremely unlikely with that math score. Both schools are known for taking the “liberal” part of liberal arts seriously - you need to be well versed in all areas, regardless of major, even if they don’t have distribution requirements. I don’t even know that a hooked athlete could make it in with that score. You’ll either need to improve it dramatically or look elsewhere.

Check out Washington College in Chestertown, MD for their writing program. It is an excellent LAC and not nearly as selective as Kenyon or Hamilton. They have a modern languages department though it doesn’t look as strong as their writing program.

Hey—thanks for the replies! I’m aware that my scores are low, I’m just applying to one as a reach as I was told to my my counselor. I just wanted to see which language program was better to figure which would be a better match.

What languages are you talking about? Some will have excellent Latin, others excellent Japanese, another college excellent French…
What level have you currently reached in these languages?
Are you an ELL or is English your native language (/do you speak another language than English at home?)
