Hi!
I'm going into 10th grade next year and I'm thinking about joining key club. I volunteer some on my own, so my question is would colleges rather see me taking initiative and volunteering on my own or joining the key club?

Personally, i don’t think there’s a significant difference.

If you were in Key Club you could run for officer positions, that’s the only difference.

joining key club gives you scholarship opportunities, grant opportunities (if you are willing to take the initiative to make your own project), and as sillycereal said, leadership opportunities.

I say do both. I do both; I volunteer on a weekly basis on my own, and I do my key club’s volunteering events.

Personally, I believe it’s not just volunteering that you can get out of Key Club. My whole high school career I’ve been in Key Club, and I made countless friends, organized major fundraisers and events, had club officer, then district board positions, and most importantly, had a lot of fun.

But it honestly doesn’t matter what you do in the end.
It depends on if you’re willing to put in effort, whether it’s through individually volunteering or through Key Club.
Don’t join because you think colleges will want to see “Key Club” on your application.

One girl from my district took all the opportunities she could in Key Club, starting from her freshman year. Now she’s international president.

Thanks! I think I’m going to join for the leadership opportunities.

Before joining the Key Club, I would look into its track record on your campus; not every school with a Key Club has a successful Key Club. If it is amazing, go for it! If not, take advantage of the situation and make it amazing.

Also remember that there can be many opportunities for leadership and scholarships by general volunteering. Speaking generally, volunteering outside of Key Club tends to make your experiences more unique, which is an advantage when applying for scholarships that require essays.

Just remember that no matter what you do, that you stay dedicated! In the end, that will give you the most opportunities, and will enhance your life the most. :)

I am going to be a senior and I have never done Key Club nor volunteer work before due to my lack of knowledge on how I should go about it. Since I doing those things my senior year would it negatively impact my college applications?

What is key club?

Exactly. From what i’ve gathered myself it’s a club focused on volunteering and giving back to the community.

I’ve…also heard it’s the stereotypical asian club, as in, all asian girls (and maybe one lone guy) who want to impress colleges join it, but that’s what my friends have told me about their Key Clubs.

We don’t have one here ourselves (we don’t have any clubs, really), but our UNICEF club sounds like that. I’d join myself if the P wasn’t a snob and the rest of the people in it weren’t suck-ups.

Thanks for the advice!
You’re right, key club is a club set up for volunteering in the community.
I know some friends in it… and they’re all white. Definitely not set out for ivies either. I’m the only one aiming somewhere up there.
I think I’ll probably just check it out for a year and see how it is.
