Key Club?

Hi, sorry if my thread doesn't really fit this particular forum, but there is no real place for it. Ok, I heard people mentioning key club, and I had to no idea what it was. Eventually, I went to their website, and I still have only a vague idea as to what it really is. All I know is that it builds leadership qualities...etc. that I hear everywhere.

Does anyone care to be more specific on what Key Club is? What EXACTLY do you do in it? Any examples from your high school chapter? And finally, if I find out I like it, how do I go about starting it in my school? Thanks a bunch!!!

they make keys for the homeless so they can have homes.

Key Club is a community service club. At my school, we are affiliated with the local Kiwanis group (an adult organization). However, I'm not sure if this is standard. If you wanted to start one, I would try to contact the national organization.

The Key Club in our high school is also affiliated with the Kiwanis Club. I think that most of them are. I have been a member of key club sine tenth grade and it is basically a community service organization. Key Club is the largest club for young people in the world and its membership is really quite staggering (can't remember the exact number now). To start your own club I think you just need an advisor and 15 members. You do have to pay dues to the international club though so to be an official member you do have to pay the dues. To start your own club you need to contact your district office. I know that the Pacific Northwest district includes AK, WA, OR, ID, northern CA, and part of Canada. I'm not sure what state you live in though so you have to find out what key club district your state is in. I would highly recommend getting involved in key club. It is one of the better high school clubs to join.

I believe that clubs need to be sponsored by the local Kiwanis chapter. They serve as oversight in financial transactions and major projects.

There are multiple levels of organization.
Club < Division < Region < District < International

It's all grouped by geographical proximity. To get help, contact the officers at a nearby high school. They should be able to get you to the right people.

Your division will provide some of the community service opportunities. However, the local club should find activities on its own as well. These might include volunteering at a senior center, run/walk for a cure event, fundraising money for charity, etc.

bump.

what kind of things have any of you recently done? And if you had the bare minimum amount of members, how much would one membership cost (for one person)? thanks, again

Key club is a community service club, yes. You can participate any time in your high school year, there's a 10$ due just to let you know. hmmm. So far as I know, at the beginning of the year, we have 150 members signed up + showed up at the meeting. And in every meeting later on, the # of students reduced by 1/3. And the members who actually particpate in the club activities are about 30-40 mems.
For more information, you can contact www.keyclub.org or contact your school's key club officer. I believe key club is having a 3 days convention that anyone can sign up for it. If you are interested, you can just go and check it out. I dont remember how much it costs, 120$ or something...
And one more thing, Key club is for high school only. There is some kind of "key club" in grade schools too, but I dont remember its name. And for college and above, you have kiwanis organization.
ok... anything else??? ^_^

I was wrong, I apologize.
In college, we call it "circle k" and kiwanis is for out of college people

I believe the OP is asking info and wants to start a club at his/her school.

Dues vary depending on the district and division, as well as the local club. It comes out to be around $10-15, regardless of the number of members. Essentially each level will collect some fees for operating costs. The fees collected at the more local level is to provide member services, such as flyers, newsletters, and perhaps some social event.

This time of year, March of Dimes is a big project for Key Club. Clubs participate in multiple ways to fundraise money for this charity, directly or indirectly.

ohhh I see, that's gonna be a fight then. To start a club, you need to ask someone (teacher) to be the advisor and in charge of the club. Then this teacher's gonna request the principle + board of education... It will take a while, but if you got it, it's gonna be great.

I believe that the due fee for each member of Key Club is $8.00. We are involved in projects all of the time. Right now, we are collecting money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with a fundraiser called "Pennies for Patients". It is doing really well; we are very happy with the outcome. We are also getting read to do something for a local organization called "The Arc". This is an organization that is trying to start an art gallery that actually features art from children with developmental disabilities. We are helping them raise money by participating in a BBQ sale. It involves selling BBQ to local businesses, delivery included. We are also helping this organization open up the art gallery by cleaning up the spot for the gallery, and helping with other various things that are needed for grand opening. We do tons of projects like this all throughout the year. You should talk to someone at your school about Key Club. It is really a great club.

The dues vary from district to district and even from club to club. I know for the Pacific Northwest District the maximum you can charge for dues is $15 and the minimum is like $11. That is just one of the things that you have to find out from your district office.

Actually, I don't really think that there's a max and min. It's really up to the discretion of the club. If you overcharge, you'll get less members and you wouldn't want that. You can undercharge, but the costs are just going to be paid for by club funds.

best advice: go to the website, they told you how much the due is for each region of US. again, it's www.keyclub.org but I believe that the average is $10.50

There really is a max and a min that you can charge. But it varies from district to district. I know because I was club treasurer last year and I was trained at he convention by the district treasurer. By the way is anyone going to the April convention in Seattle? I am so excited I can't wait.

No offense but I hated going to the meetings...so I stopped eventually.

Ah, interesting. I suppose that they don't have those restrictions here in CNH. I've been through the entire system and haven't heard of such practices.
