NEmom - Check out the NCAA Job Market - it is the largest job board I have seen for for sports jobs outside of teamworkonline, which is really geared towards pro sports sales jobs. Lots of universities post on there positions in media relations, communications, and they list requirements and preferred majors. This will give you an idea of what majors your friend's S should be looking towards for certain jobs.

Also, tell your friend's S to make SURE that your he gets involved with the sports department. That will give him the experience that most entry level positions desire, as well as competency with the programs that the industry uses. Different departments use different programs, once you have the years of experience in the department and the competency with the programs, you will become attractive to employers.

I just really read the first post and saw that he was in sports statistics. I would suggest Economics, Statistics, Mathematics as majors as well. For example, there was a posting with the Boston Celtics for a "Basketball Operations Statistics Intern" that sounds exactly what your son wants. It lists requirements and what they are looking for in the listing, linked below.

The kid could also volunteer to do interviews with rising prep stars for some of the internet sites like Rivals and Scout. They have video interviews, are run on a shoestring at the local level, and would probably be a good way for this kid to see how he likes interviewing, etc.

A2Wolves thanks for that valuable link and some insight into majors. He is interested in sports analysis (ie; the kind of thing that the Celtics are offering an internship for). At least that is my understanding. I will pass this along.

Bessie, thanks, and I will pass that along as well.

Check out the Vanderbilt scholarship website. There actually is a scholarship available for sports journalism!
Good luck!
