Based on past posts, BU should be sending out the letters for both Kilachand and Trustees in the next few days. Since they each accept a small number of students and there’s some overlap, I thought I’d do a thread that combined them. Please post when you receive results! Good luck to all!!
Thanks for getting this started…my kid is nominated for the Trustees scholarship and I wasn’t sure if they were notified prior to the March 31 announcement. That said, i think it’ll be extraordinarily hard to be named one of these scholars…past winners sound like top-notch students who would have been standouts at any tier 1 school…
@southernhope In the past few years, the notifications seen to have been mailed between the 18th and the 20th, just before the general admissions notifications. But you’re right, they only name 20 Trustees Scholars, so the students need to be both exceptional and lucky!
My understanding is that Kilachand aims to have about 75 or so students in each class. Given that the university’s yield rate is only about 20 percent, that suggests they may well accept a few hundred students to Kilachand. That’s still not a lot of students, but far better odds than Trustees!
Does anyone know what admissions officers consider the most important portion of the honors college app? Is it the essay, or do stats play a bigger factor?
Stressed4lyfe With programs like Kilachand, it tends to be “all of the above” – the students tend to have excellent grades and test scores, ecs, etc.
For basically all of these types of programs, though, students often complain that other students with lower grades or test scores were chosen while they weren’t. That suggests that some of the students have probably written essays that caught the admissions officers’ attention, even though their stats might not have been as stellar. Alternatively, perhaps the students who thought they should have been chosen didn’t come across as well in the recommendations.
The main point I’d leave you with is that when a selection committee is choosing a few percent – or sometimes just a fraction of one percent – of the applicant pool, there’s going to be an element of chance. So enjoy the opportunities you do get offered and try not to dwell on the ones that didn’t happen! Good luck!
Are the honors college results announced along with the admission decisions?
@loudounmom In past years, it looks as though the students selected for Kilachand and Trustees heard their results a bit before the rest of the kids. And the decisions all seem to come together, based on what I’ve read. But this is our family’s first encounter with BU’s process; D1 didn’t apply there. Any veterans want to chime in?
also @arlmom2 when you mentioned upstream that the decisions are “mailed,” does that mean regular mail as opposed to email notification?
@SouthernHope I think the answer is both email and regular mail, as is the case with many schools – at least with accepted candidates.
@Loudounmom Here’s more information than I was able to send on my phone!
Here’s a note that @mountainhiker (thanks!) posted last year (3/14/14), which came in an email from a BU admissions officer:
“[Student] will be notified of all decisions at once. She will receive an email from BU Admissions directing her to the Applicant Link. There she will find a letter from the Director of Admissions that will include various tabs for the various programs and scholarships she has applied for, as well as financial aid. Each tab will include information for each specific program, or merit or financial aid award. Students who are admitted to the Kilachand Honors College will be notified of their acceptance on the Kilachand Honors College tab, a tab that is only visible to students who are admitted to the program. A welcome pack will then be mailed from BU admissions and Kilachand mails a separate welcome pack a few days later.”
For what it’s worth, I think it’s silly that they only use(d) the Kilachand tab for students who were accepted to the program. How much more work would it be to write a generic “We’re sorry, but we had many more talented candidates than we have space in the program.” and post that for all of the students who were rejected? They get so many questions on CC and presumably elsewhere from students who don’t understand why they don’t seem to have a Kilachand response. These students took the time to write an extra essay for their applications; they deserve a direct yes/no response, imho.
Perhaps if any BU Admissions folks are monitoring this, they could respond?
Some more general questions are answered here:

I thought that I had seen a thread suggesting that the Kilachand packets were mailed between March 18th and 20th last year, but I can’t find it now. I know that virtually all students seemed to receive their email notifications on the 22nd last year, which is consistent with it being the 21st this year. I assume the reason they space out the emails is to try to avoid crashing their server, Note that they ask you not to check the portal until you receive the email.
Sorry @stressed4lyfe I responded to your earlier question above, but forgot the “at” sign. Scroll up the thread a bit and you’ll see my response re what scholarship committees look for.
Thanks @Arlmom2 for the updates! Hey, on the mail thing, there are still a handful of colleges that do it the old-fashioned way. Georgetown uses only paper mail and my kid was literally on the front porch off & on for two days to see when it would arrive! It was kind of neat to see her go through what we all did…
Thank you @Arlmom2
so with decisions coming out in the morning, I guess we have to assume that there’ll be no early notification of the Trustee or Honors…hmmm…I guess, unless something is released this afternoon…
In a normal world, I’d think, “well maybe none of the 20 winners are here at CC and that’s why we don’t know” but we all know that CC is where they sprung out of.
@southernhope I think you’re right, and that the students selected for Trustees and Kilachand will find out with everyone else. It’s possible they mailed their packets in the last day or two so they’ll get them soon after the portal announcement, but that’s about it.
BU is the only school D2 applied to that made students apply early to be eligible for the scholarship and then didn’t notify them until RD. That doesn’t quite seem sporting…
When are decisions coming out? Tomorrow?
@jb9832 It looks as though the decisions are likely to come out in waves during the day tomorrow. They’ll email you when your decision is up on the portal. Good luck!!
Accepted Kilachand (very surprised and honored) but it looks like I got the President’s Scholarship instead of the Trustee scholarship. Very grateful but unless I got a merit award miracle I guess I’ll have to pursue my others options.
@CollegeGirl2k19 I got into honors college too I’m beyond happy! But no scholarship at all. Are you international?
Nope, I’m from the U.S! And congratulations!
Do you mind sharing you stats? I didn’t get into the honors college, and I’m a bit surprised.
