Kind of a personal dilemma --- transfer into UF???

Hello everyone. I am currently going through some messed up stuff and I am pretty stressed and unsure of what to do.

I am currently attending FIU (Florida International University) which is located in Miami. I always lived in Miami when I was a teen, my family moved 2 hours up north when I was in High School and therefore I spent my last years of High School in that new place. I attended the IB program in which I graduated with the IB diploma, a 3.3 unweighted GPA and 4.4 weighted GPA. I kind of knew I could get into a better school than FIU but I missed Miami a lot and really wanted to go back. Mistake. I decided I could go live with my uncle and grandmother and I did.

I just finished my first semester at FIU. I finished with straight As except an A- in a 1-credit course which sets my college GPA to 3.97. I came into college with 22 credits from AP/IB exams and Im currently taking 15 credits per semester and Im also thinking of attending 2-3 classes on the summer which would mean that at the end of this very summer, I will have over 60 credits.

First of all, going to live with my uncle and grandmother was a complete mistake. Im not feeling the college "feeling" since im just a commuter. Ever since the first day of school, it didnt feel right. Ok thats not a dilemma, happens to hundreds of people from what i can tell from different posts in here. The thing is, my uncle has been having financial problems etc, in order to make it short, he is going to have to move in to a smaller house, he has kids etc. In order to make it shorter...I cant stay there anymore and all of a sudden I feel that Im not going to have a place to live in anymore in a couple months and you dont know how much that has stressed me. I always have the option of going back to my mom but the local university (FGCU) is worse than FIU and I just wouldnt like to go there. I have thought of getting an apartment but Miami is just TOO EXPENSIVE and a rent goes for like $800 for a 1bedroom apartment and I wouldnt be able to tell you how Im going to get that kind of money...

Please everyone, have patience with me, im just a little confused and stressed and was pretty much looking to get all this out.

I was thinking that maybe I could transfer to UF and go live in the dorms? I think that will really give me the college "feeling" and I wouldnt have to worry where to live etc...

What are my chances to be able to transfer to UF?
When is the soonest I can do so?
Do I have to wait till I have acquired the 60 credits even before applying?

Here is a quick summary of my stuff:

High School:
IB diploma recipient.
3.3 unweighted
4.4 weighted

College:
22 transfer credits from AP/IB
Completed first semester with 15 credit hours with a 3.97 GPA.
Mathematics major with a possible minor in Computer Science.

ANY kind of help, advise, opinion that you have will help me immensely. Really appreciated.

Sorry forgot to put that I have 1290 SATs:
700 math
590 reading

You should apply you have a good chance...but I don't think you will be able to get into the dorms...if you can't go to FIU anymore see if your local community college offers classes required for your major or do gen eds there

Why can't you just live in the dorms at FIU (if your issue is just the housing problem)???

i agree,

i would try to live on campus at fiu and then think things through. you can always try to transfer for the fall 2008 term.

as seiclan said, if you like fiu, but housing is the problem, the dorms from what i have read seem to be nice. this may also give you a greater sense of community an connection to the campus.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Besides, UF doesn't really like taking in transfers with under 60 credits, you'd have a better shot if you waited even though your grades look really good. I'm not saying they wouldn't take you, but you have to realize that people coming from CC's with 60+ credits and AA degrees get first preference, then people from other universities with 60+ credits get 2nd preference, and anyone under is kind of the last man on the totem pole, so to speak.

Florida has very, very high admission considerations for transfers who have not completed 60 credit hours. Polkadot_heart is right when they say that AA degrees are considered first and the simple way of saying it is that they don't look kindly on transfers who have not reached junior standing. In other words, if you are a freshman or current sophomore, you have to have extremely(!) good scores to compete which generally translates into honors-qualifying stats. Transferring in would be a lot easier if you were aiming for junior year there, so it would probably be better to try for getting housing at FIU for now!
