Kind of early, but do you have any ideas...

So my dad has to do extra work on the summer to get a teacher's certificate. My mom has to work overtime at Subway to support us. I'm a freshman, but my parents told me that an internship or volunteer work at a law office (my dream summer job, if not at D.C.) will have to wait until next year. What should I do over the summer then? No one can take care of my sister, so I can't leave the house because I have to take care of her. What should I do that might increase my chances at an awesome college? Ideas? Thanks.

I will try really hard to make it possible for me to do the law office stuff. But from how it's looking, my efforts will be futile.

Open an online business, or some kind of law discussion forums, or something. Maybe take some kind of online class, or get involved in some kind of activity that can be counted as an extracurricular, but you don't necessarily need to leave home for (from the top of my head I can offer film editing/production... get a camcorder, hook it up to the computer, make music videos or something starring your sister.) Study for the ACT/SAT and get a really awesome score.

I know people who have taken no AP classes (although that's because our school doesn't offer them), have standard extracurrics (meaning they spent their summer on the couch watching tv, and join newsletter when school starts), and get into good colleges (such as UM Ann Arbor - btw their law school is GORGEOUS. I went there today, so I'm a bit obsessed.)

If you're a freshman, I wouldn't stress too much, you still have more summers to do stuff.

Read. It will help you improve your SAT verbal and writing scores, should be lots of fun and you'll be setting a good example for your sister.

Yeah, don't worry too much about rising sophmore summer. Just study a lot to keep up your GPA and prepare for the PSAT and SAT. Most of all enjoy yourself, though, as this will be the last summer before college you can really afford to :(

My freshmen year I just laid back and went swimming. I also wrote a chess engine. Don't do things for colleges, seriously. Just do what you love and have fun.

There's a first time to lose everything as well.........catch my drift at what you may be able to lose this summer with that special lady.....purrrr....

NOT YOUR VIRGINITY SICKO!!! A few pounds.

Sagar, it sure helps for college if what you love to do is write chess engines though lol

Wow. Thanks you guys. Chess engines... way beyond my skills, lol. Yeah, studying for the PSAT and SAT (mainly the essay portion) is on my list, and I'm planning to work more on Russian and Chinese. I like to write prose as well...

Haha, sittingbull, that brought some laughs. Yes, I will definitely lose my virginity to that special lady. But considering that I'm a HETEROSEXUAL FEMALE, I'll opt for shedding some pounds for cross country.

I do love to write chess engines. Definetely not for college though. I liked it because it was a problem I didn't know how to solve, and I worked at it and thinked very hard. I tend to find brainteasers, and other similar research questions equally intriguing.

You need to just chill... seriously.

No, no ideas here
