My darling daughter applied for the architecture program. My wife thinks she should have applied for engineering with the idea of transferring later, as being a female applying for engineering would help her more than applying for architecture. Is that the case?

It’s been a long time since I was an undergrad, but I don’t think such a plan is feasible. While it might be easier to get in, a transfer is difficult if not impossible. Archies, as they were known in my day, take an almost completely separate curriculum that includes design courses from day one. They were a unique breed, appearing to have plenty of free time for a few weeks and then disappearing into their studios virtually 7x24 while working on design projects.

Hopefully this hypothetical will be a non-issue. Good luck to your daughter tomorrow.

Thanks Padre. She got in!
