Kind of Lost

So I applied to the academy for the class of 2011 and was put on the waiting list. I then recieved an AOG scolarship and I will be attending Marion this fall. And to be honest, that's all I know right now. I know I need to apply for a nomination, but is that all I have to do, or do I need to go throught the whole process again? Any help by someone who has gone through this or knows about it would be greatly appreciated. I just remember last year at this time I was recieveing my DoDMERB stuff in the mail and got that large application package from west point, but nothing is coming and I haven't heard from them.

Thanks!

All of the cadets that went through civil prep last year are now at Beast so you won't hear from them for at least 6 weeks. :)

My son was a prep at NMMI last year so I can tell you what I know. You must reapply for a nomination. The AOG will write you a letter of recommendation for your nomination packet if you would like them to. You also have to do the application packet again but I don't think they will send that until August or September. Yes, you have to answer the essay questions again and get teacher recommendations. You have to pass your CFA again too. Your advisor at Marion will help you through the process and will be there to answer questions as they come up. The good news is your Dodmerb stuff is good for two years so you don't have to do that part again!

Congratulation on getting civil prep, only about 65 get that opportunity.

My son will be at Marion also. We talked to Col. Herbert last month and he told us to get the nomination aplications done before he reports to Marion. He wrote letters of reccomendation for him and mailed them to all of his nomination sources and sent copies to us. He also told us that once he gets to Marion they will help with the application process, he said that we do not need to fill out a complete new application but that the app on file will be updated through out the year.

Sorry to sidetrack but what stats did you have when you applied to get into Prep Academy?
I'm hoping to do the same.

Bump.

alright thanks for the info. I'll get my nomination stuff in asap. SteslaS I'll pm you with all of my stats.

First of all congrats on making the waiting list - it means you were found "fully qualified" to attend USMA! My son applied for the class of 2010 and was "wait listed" as well. His father and I have just returned from his R-Day for the class of 2011 ~ So, in regard to the reapplication process, we have danced this dance before (in fact we danced it all last year!). In our experience, we were instructed by the USMA admissions dept. that everything had to be re-submitted, with the exception of his DoDMERB medical clearance and his SAT scores. We actually received a letter stating that his medical clearance did not need to be re-done unless he had a change in his health/wellness. As I recall, they "rolled over" his first USMA file, so we could access the "new" one on-line easily, but he still had to submit all of the stuff they had asked for the first time around (for example, NEW letters from Math/Science instructors, NEW letters of rec., NEW/current transcripts, etc). He received the candidate booklet that has all of the forms in it, so he filled them all out and re-submitted everything. If you have not re-received that booklet of forms you should contact the admissions department and have them send you one. As you know you also need to seek/receive a new nomination as well.
We moved across the country right after his his senior high school year, so he had to seek his nominations from new Reps in a new state (pretty stressful, but the second time around he received both a Congressional and a Senatorial nomination, so it turned out okay!). Perhaps you have a relationship with your original nomination source and they can help you along in that regard (from our experience, we found that they usually look very favorably upon "wait listed" applicants who have the staying power to try again. Don't be shy about making it known that your conviction to attend USMA is strong enough to go through the application process again). We know it is difficult to be wait listed, but, I will share with you from a hind-sight perspective, that this extra year of maturity and development will find you entering the class of 2012 in a much stronger position. Our son spent a year at a CA University, and in spite of a typical, and wonderful college experience (academics balanced by sunny skies, beautiful co-eds, dorm life and parties) he never gave up his conviction that at West Point he would be surrounded by excellence and could be doing so much "more". That conviction strengthened his resolve that he could/would make it through Plebe year and beyond. The fact that he also spent an additional year working to get into West Point makes him appreciate being there so much more (I truly feel that no matter how difficult life at USMA is, we will never get the "I want to come home" phone call from him). So, first and foremost, be aggressive in seeking your nomination, then enjoy your year of additional growth and maturity -R-Day for 2012 will be here before you know it! Best Wishes to you!

USMA84/2011,

Welcome aboard! How was your first phone call this past weekend?

Excellent phone call. Life is good in Beast. Crazy busy, of course - but it is everything he anticipated it would be (Dad is a grad -so he has heard the stories of "life at USMA" from family and friends for years) - So, he's happy and sounds really great.
