Kindly Counsel for the best possible college.

hi Guys
I am overjoyed to see so many of you making it to the top notch colleges. You guys really deserved it.
Well I too applied to a limited number of colleges for a B.S Civil Engineering degree and I need your advice on the best possible choice I can make. Factors I am taking into account are Climate, Education, Research opportunities, Internship opportunities, reputation and scope of scholarships after the freshman year.
So here goes the list for consideration:

UT Austin (****rell) - Honors, 1,000 USD scholarship for the freshman year.
UIUC - James Scholar, Honors
Purdue - Honors
Penn State
Rose Hulman - 3,000 USD for the first year.
Drexel University - 17,000 USD for the first year.

And Congratulations to all of you once again!!!!!!!!

Anyone??? Bump

Hi There

What is the deal at Purdue ?

I am most likely joining Purdue as I am told that it is in the top 10 and definately top 5 for Civil

Hope this helps you

Well here is what you need:
Texas: A great school, the only school in your list to be in a city, so if you want city life it is the best. Climate is much milder than other places. Possible one or two days of slight snow in the winter months. UT is the best school in Texas by far so you will be provided with a lot of educational and internship opportunities. Also it is one of the top state schools in the nation so you don’t really have to worry about reputation.

UIUC: located in a college town, close to Chicago. High quality engineering school and a top notch research department. You will have a midwestern climate with a lot of snow in the winter and sunshine in the summer. Internship opportunities should be good too.

The other school I would look at is Rose-Hulman: But the problem with it is that it is not really nationally recognized. But from all I heard it is a brilliant school. Good luck with deciding. And remember that in state schools, International students don’t have much scholarship opportunities.

You got in UIUC civil program and you’re thinking about it !! That too with the james scholars thing.
Unless money is a factor, go to UIUC. Coming second would be purdue.

@compscifan: What’s wrong UT Austin? UT Austin has a lower acceptance rate than UIUC and has an amazing climate for us indian students.

I’m sorry, that was a biased opinion, coz I was myself rejected by UTA :P

Anyway, Yeah you can consider UT as well and Austin’s a AWESOME place to live in. Great city. Certainly better than the cornfield of Urbana. UIUC = UTexas in opportunities, education, academic rigor. You can’t go wrong in picking either. :)

BTW, Won’t UTA be more expensive as an OOS ?

PS - UIUC civil is selective. Doesn’t follow the overall university selectivity pattern.

bumping it up.

Man!! Why are you even bumping this thread? Go to UIUC! Its a great school for engineering. In my opinion, Rose Hulman would come second(just because I like small colleges).

Yeah man UIUC is a fantastic place for engineering. Plus its very industrial so you’ll get jobs and internships very easily. No problem :)

@mysticgohan and others : Why not UT of A guys? As I have said before UT Austin has a great weather for us Indians and being bang in the middle of Austin which is the capital of Texas it should offer greater internship opportunities than the ‘cornfield’ situated UIUC.

Plus the rankings are not really different for UIUC and UT of Austin for Civil Engineering. UIUC as u know has a very cold weather!

guys, kindly try to answer the above points as fast as possible because I have to take my decision in the coming 10 days or so!

EVERY reply is appreciated!!!

Well Pink Panther from the rankings yeah its not really too different as the rankings suggest. But rankings are just rankings. In any case the two seem really great. I think most of us are recommending UIUC cause being more rounded as an eng school we know of it better. For your field though its fine. So really its totally your choice you wont go wrong either way :)

I have to decide between UT-Austin and U of I myself. I’d have to agree with most people here that UT is very comparable to illinois when it comes to opportunities and education.

But, a few things I can let you know through my brother(senior at UT) is that Austin is an AMAZING place. It’s the music capital of the world and has the best sports stadium and atmosphere in the country. A lot of the biggest companies recruit very heavily since it’s the number one engineering school in the state, and Houston, Dallas and Austin are home to a lot of big firms. And like others said, the weather is a lot more suited to us Indians than in Illinois. Also, if you manage to get a 1000$ scholarship , you’re entitled to pay in-state tuition fees(which is around 9K).

I would definitely recommend UT-Austin to you out of that list, but it really depends upon where you think you’ll fit in the best. Cheers!

@ manav77 “Also, if you manage to get a 1000$ scholarship , you’re entitled to pay in-state tuition fees(which is around 9K)”

But I guess I am an international student since I donot have a US passport. So, how am I entitled to pay instate tuition fees i.e 9k? Kindly explain.

The 1000 USD I got was a merit scholarship by the way!

Check the 4th point in the ‘exceptions’ list. You’re lucky! :)

@manv77: dude that is for Texas State University I guess. Here, I am talking about University of Texas at Austin!

[Out-of-State Tuition Waivers - Cockrell School of Engineering](<a href=“Financial Support”>Financial Support)

Just saw this. Apparently, UT has made it much harder to get tuition waivers, but it’s still a possibility. I don’t really know much since I’ll be getting a green card soon, so that will make it easier for me. But, I’m pretty sure the 1000$ scholarship waiver is a Texas state rule.
