Just to keep people up to date on the latest "scuttlebutt".....

Apparently, there was a letter submitted to the Commandant's office in which certain people (about 30 overall) were "indited" for using alcohol to some extent.

By my understanding, the people on this list were of varying circumstances:

Some people were under 21
Some people were 25
Some people drank in the park
Some people were staut teetotalers

Today (8/19/09) there were rumors flying about additional restrictions that were going to be implemented in the regimental as a direct result of this letter AND...

WHAT ACTUALLY happened today was that almost every single room in the regiment was given a "health and welfare inspection" (I.E.: Raiding rooms for alcohol.) If your room wasn't inspected today, it will be soon.

SSSSSEEEEEEEEMMMMMMSSSS to me that on Februaury 9th, 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy got up on the podium in Wheeling, West Virginia to make his famous speech where he had in his hands the names of "205" CONFIRMED communists.

I'm begining to wonder what this school has really come to? Does the administration really deal with anonymous letters in such respect that those in the letter were called in for questioning? Are we really going to shape policies around false accusations? Does anyone see anything here that doesn't borderline absolute madness?

the really sad part is, the cowardly written anonymous letter was immediately brought to the supe and the ball started rolling. however, the well thought out and widely signed petition in regards to the new DoIT policies was brushed under the carpet. this is nonsense.

a) Why don’t you just quit?
b) Why don’t you just deal with it?
c) Why don’t you remain calm and gather more information before you react?
d) Why don’t you remember just to leave the place better than you found it?

This isn’t a very professional report. Is it known that the letter was “anonymous”? What does “widely signed” mean in terms of the petition? What did the petition say? Why would any thinking midshipman sign a document challenging the new administration?

Not saying it couldn’t happen, just that it doesn’t ring true.

I joked with my son last weekend, that we should just take one of the unused sailboats from the waterfront and go out on the sound. He said it sounded like fun, if he wanted to be on restriction for the next trimester. And he’s not at all afraid of a room inspection, because he understands the rules, even if he’s not averse to breaking rules from time to time when the stakes aren’t as high.

If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything. And you don’t have to worry about surprise inspections.

The petition was sent around and was signed by any midshipman who wished to support the letter. We signed the petition because some of our rights were being infringed upon and we felt that if we spoke up then we could prevent a bad policy from going into effect.

If I’ve heard correctly, the framer of the petition is serving on a committee to help … steer/influence/provide reasonableness(?) check for the IT issues. There may be other Mids involved… I just don’t know it. All in all, a good thing.

In addition, some equipment/implementation changes in the DoIT wind are much more consistent with what is pretty much ‘industry norm’ out in corporate America… another good thing (support/reliability/maintainability/flexibility all should improve.

And I THINK they are kicking the tires on a new(er) approach… a pilot project with a subset of mids. all in all, encouraging.

Look, when it’s not right, I’ll say that. But by the same token, when things ARE pointed towards a good direction, I’ll applaud that.

they were going to switch to an “industry norm” firewall but after only 2 or so hours they immediately switched to the old firewall. Pointed in the right direction? We were for an hour or two but it was turned right back around.

SomeRandom… “Patience, young jedi”
It’s encouraging to hear about. Mebbe they needed longer extension cord? <kidding>
Often, it’s one lil pesky detail that derails a cutover… They’ll get it handled, and the next one should work fine.
Stay positive :)</kidding>
