Kinsolving or Jester?

I recently have been admitted into Architectural Engineering at the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT for the Fall of 2011. I have to make my housing choices soon and I don't know what I should pick! It is between Kinsolving and Jester! Last night I made a hypothetical class schedule using all of the classes I would be taking if I was there currently and after manipulating it for two hours I finally made a fake schedule. I had a map of UT, found where all the classes were and highlighted them. Heres the deal, all of my classes were WAY closer to the engineering side of campus, but I wanted to room in a coed dorm and in a more social setting.

Should I pick Kinsolving even though I don't want to live with all girls even though all my classes will be very close when I attend there next fall, or should I pick Jester because I heard it's slightly more social, it's coed, but the downfall is it's fall from the section of campus I need to be at. What are your opinions or what you've heard about each?

Congrats on getting into ArchE! I was an ArchE major, but it’s much harder to get into that program now. I lived in SRD, just down the street from Kinsolving. I was very happy I lived there instead of Jester, because it was much more convenient. Kinsolving would be my vote.

Kinsolving. The food is =D

the food is better in Kinsolving and it’s close to engineering classes, if you don’t mind living in the ugliest building on campus. lol

I live on Duren, just across from Kinsolving, and it’s even much more beautiful. I love the high-class feel of the lounge on first floor. And the furnitures etc of the resident room are made from smooth, solid wood =3. We all have private baths also. The downside is the additional cost, and it’s more like a place for privacy and study, not for social like Jester.

Duren is SO nice but if youre looking for an active dorm social life it’s definitely not the place. i have a friend who lives there and she said she only knows one person on her floor besides her roommate. are you in honors? the honors quad is right across from kins (takes me 5ish minutes or less to get there) and it’s wonderful and has a great social atmosphere. plus it’s coed, or at least Blanton is (that’s where I live).

@AmericanInParis: Yup. Exactly. I’m in engineering with 16 hours and am planning to do research, so Duren’s perfect for my workload. Anytime, you can always find a completely silent and comfortable study room there. But like you said, it’s not for social life in general (but again it’s great if you already have friends or study groups living there).

This guy votes Kinsolving. It’s not there’s no guys anywhere. Duren and Whitis Court are right next to it, and Kinsolving has all the dining. So if you go down there’s plenty of guys getting food, or even just studying.

Definitely Kinsolving! It is much more convenient for Engineering. Previous posters are right, there are always lots of guys at Kinsolving, because that’s where the food is! If you are in engineering, you might get tired of being around guys all day and actually enjoy a girl’s only dorm.

And many engineering/science students do live in duren, so you might find a good study group there.

If you’re in engineering go Kinsolving. Plus the food is much better. I moved from Whitis Court (across from Kins) to Jester this year, and J2 is no Kins : (

Thanks everyone for your replies! I think I’m going to put kinsolving, duren, whitis, and possibly include littlefield somewhere in there too. I already applied for engineering honors but haven’t received an answer back yet. I’m not sure what order I want to put them in but I finally understand it would be ridiculous to live all the way across campus when I could live in one of those dorms and walk 5 minutes to my classes.

^^ “…ridiculous to live all the way across campus when I could live in one of those dorms and walk 5 minutes to my classes.”

Well, to be honest… distance is not the main point here. No matter where you live, you’ll reach your class in 5-15 minutes walk, and it’s not that bad. Really. My reason for choosing Duren is not because of the distance - it’s because I love the splendid place. It’s the most condusive dorm for serious study.

Right now some of my classes are located near Jester. I need to take 15 minutes to get there, which is pretty long. But I don’t care, 'cause living in Duren (for me) worths more.

Stay at Kinsolving! It’s where I am now. Make sure you choose the option with connecting bath; it’ll make living here much more comfortable. Also, there are ALWAYS guys around. We ladies know how to keep it real.
