As I’ve mentioned I didn’t have a KA for nearly 40 years of our married life. I managed with a good hand held. That said, now that I have a KA, I really like it. I like that I can walk away from it while it’s doing it’s thing for a minute or two and in that time I can:
Put away ingredients
Get additional ingredients ready
Load the dishwasher
Get the cookies sheets, loaf pans or whatever ready.
Hands free allows me to be more organized! Which is important to me in the process. I prefer to clean and put away as I go when I’m baking.
This is how I (and D ) normally roll. With H and S - no. I appreciate that they like to cook/bake but the concept of “cleaning up as you go along” has not caught on with them.
My Kitchen Aid is on the bottom shelf of my pantry, basically floor level (I have a 12 inch deep, floor to ceiling pantry/cabinets). It never occurred to be to have it at waist-ish height until I read your post! Maybe because right now it is not an issue having it so low. And I don’t use it often. But as I get older, lifting it up may be an issue.
I consider my Kitchen Aid to be a work horse. I use it for bread dough and cookie batter (especially if I have double the recipe). In the late summer, I have attachments for grinding and slicing vegetables. It now sits on my counter as it is too heavy to move. I think it is about 40 years old as I think my mom gave it to me as a wedding present. My hand mixer only comes out for mashing potatoes or making whipped cream. I did have years where I didn’t use the Kitchen Aid but now I am sure glad I have it.
Starting a new thread for questions since the other one is almost a year old.
Has anyone bought a replacement bowl for their tilt head mixer? Mine is ok, but I’d like one with a handle since my grip isn’t very strong. I’m looking at this one, but I’m worried about the quality of the colored coating. Love the look since we have black stainless appliances, but I’m wondeing about the durability of the coating. 5 Quart Tilt-Head Metallic Finish Stainless Steel Bowl Radiant Black KSM5SSBRB | KitchenAid?
Several of you know about our still ongoing year long water damage rebuild; sadly they boxed my mixer and set it in the garage for storage while the floors were being redone. The SC heat melted the grease packing, so I need to take it apart and clean/repack the grease. Has anyone done this? How hard is it? I’m pretty handy and do a lot of repairs, but I’ve never worked on a small appliance before.
My mixer is 40 years old; it’s white, and I’d love to paint it to match the kitchen; what primer/spray paint should I use?
Depends on the finish you want, but I’ve always used Rust-Oleum, no primer needed, as I posted here. Mine is on its fifth color change. A few years ago, I replaced the silver band on the head, and it looks brand new. Because almost all of the non-paintable parts are removable, this is one of the easiest paint projects you’ll ever do.
If you search for my other posts in that thread, you can see other pics.
My Kitchenaid mixer probably dates back to the early ‘80’s - I bought it second hand in the early ‘90’s and at the beginning of the pandemic it developed a problem. I couldn’t find any small appliance repair place round here that would even look at it and eventually contacted Whirlpool KitchenAid small appliance repair dept. IIRC, it cost $50 to send it in for diagnosis which included shipping and they sent a special box to pack it in with instructions. There was a longish wait maybe 6-8weeks (they’d estimated the wait time before I sent it) then told me it was diagnosed and gave a very reasonable repair estimate. It was sent back very soon thereafter good as new!
I did notice you’re planning to sort it out yourself but just in case you decide to look for another option this is the contact number for the small app repair dept. 855-845-9684 (M-F 9-5:30 EST)
My DD’s KitchenAid mixer is a hand me down from her MIL. It is on its last legs - making a grinding noise and the cord has exposed wires. I would like to get her a replacement for Christmas, but I’m wondering if a good used one would be OK. I’m not sure she uses it enough to justify the cost of a new one.
There are a couple of listings on Facebook Marketplace in my area for “new” KitchenAid mixers for ~$200. Thoughts on buying a “new” or used on this way?
It may just need new grease; you could try cleaning it out and “re-greasing” it (what I’m going to do next week). The chord is really easy to replace; you can pick one up on Amazon for about $25-$30.
I bought mine on FB marketplace from a young mom with 4 young children who loved to bake and just wanted to upgrade to the newest model. She didn’t pretend to act like it was new but she kept it in pristine condition and had all the original manual and such in a clean ziploc bag - and another ziploc with all the attachments. I paid $150 or $175 - it was less than 2 years old.
My D’s was making a grinding noise. After watching lots of videos on what might be the problem and how to fix it, I took the back piece off. A nut had fallen off! Easy fix, and it’s still running smoothly.
We had an old white KA growing up, which was a wedding gift to my parents. I always wanted one, and after using a kenwood chef in the UK, I decided my next mixer would definitely be a KA…
Went during sales and saw this beauty:
