I have an old Waring hand mixer that cost me all of $10 about 35 years ago. It works so well. I also have a Kitchenaid hand mixer…I got it for a great deal…but I’ve never used it.
I also have a 30 yr old handheld mixer that cost about $10 back in the day. It is still functional, and I prefer to use it for cake batter and things like frostings. Any dough that requires a dough hook, like dumplings dough, however, calls for the Kitchenaid!
We have a “rule” in our house that you don’t get “household” items (like mixers, even KA brand) as presents unless they are specifically asked for.
So, if your wife said she doesn’t want one, I suggest listening.
I have one and interestingly, both of my 20-something sons have them (I didn’t buy them). My step-daughter doesn’t have one, and probably wouldn’t be interested.
Crate & Barrel has all colors and different models. If you purchase & sign up online, you will receive a 10% discount. Additionally, if you enroll with Rakuten, you may also get $ back (many retailers offer this through Rakuten)
OP here - I now own a KitchenAid mixer! Long story but someone I know on Facebook was selling her 3 year old 5 quart artesian with attachments because her husband went and bought her the larger one. (Tough problem to have, 2 Kitchen Aids…)
So she sold it to me for $150 with the attachments and bowl pour thingy. Stainless steel version. Which I’m fine with as so many of the colors I liked were sold out anyway!
Resurrecting because I (re)painted my mixer yesterday. We decided it was time for me to get the larger, drop-bowl model (yay!) and take this one to Maine where the kitchen is (will be) stainless/brushed nickel, so I sprayed it for a better match:
Thanks @abasket, but really nothing to be nervous about. You build up several light coats. The spray doesn’t run and, because it’s a hammered finish, you’re not trying to get that enamel-smooth look. It’s pretty fool-proof. This is the fifth color change, and each has been “perfect,” no skill required.
It’s Paint & Primer in One, so no prepping. Cleaning is the same as with the original finish. I just wipe with the dishcloth every time I’m done using it. All finishes will scratch if they come into contact with something sharp enough at the right angle/pressure, no difference between the original and new finish in that regard.
Looks great.
It’s funny - I have 2 sons, and they both owned a Kitchen-Aid mixed by about 25, and I didn’t purchase either one of them. I don’t think of the mixer as something coveted by males, but what do I know…
