Hello CC. I was accepted as an Undeclared Freshman for for Letters and Science, however, I now want to switch to engineering. I've been reading about how to go about switching into Engineering and it says I have to take certain classes first, (Math 1A-1B, Chem 1A and 1AL, and Physics 7A). Since I got a 5 on BC, a 4 on Chem, and a 5 on Physics C: Mechanics, will I be exempt from taking these classes? If I choose to skip these classes, can I still apply to switch into Engineering? My TeleBears phase II appointment is tomorrow and I'm kind of confused right now.

Also, does anyone know how hard it is to switch into engineering? I've been looking around and I can't seem to find a definite answer. Some say it's relatively easy, while others say it's nearly impossible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

[Change of College (into COE) — UC Berkeley College of Engineering](Change of college - Berkeley Engineering)

Note that you need to wait until your third semester to apply, and must have taken the courses needed for your desired engineering major during your first two semesters. AP scores may be used, but at least two letter graded technical courses must be completed at Berkeley, and some majors have additional requirements (e.g. IEOR requires at least two letter graded math courses at Berkeley before applying).

Difficulty likely depends on which major in the College of Engineering you apply to change into. Which one are you aiming for?

Note also that if your intended engineering major requires E 7 and/or E 10, you need to take E 7 in the fall and E 10 in the spring, due to enrollment restrictions described in the above web page.

Note that if you want to study CS, it is less hassle to just do L&S CS, unless you need the ABET accreditation of the EECS major (rarely needed for CS, probably only in the context of being a patent agent or patent lawyer).

Umm, if you got 5 on only the Mechanics part of AP Physics C, you have to take Physics 7A, unfortunately. Otherwise, just pretend that you’re already in CoE and sign up for courses that other CoE freshman students would sign up for. I would sign up for Math 53 or 54 and definitely skip out of Chem 1A.

Whooops, i just checked the handbook and they changed the policy that you can indeed opt out of physics 7a only with mechanics part. Nice!

Anyway, skipping courses is totally fine. Just take the courses relevent for CoE and get decent grades and write a good statement of purpose and that is all there is. PM me if you want more details.

I’m not sure if this changed from last year, but you can skip Physics 7A only if you got a 5 on the AP Physics C: Mechanics section. Otherwise, if you have a 4 like me, no dice lol.
