I'm in the same dilemma, but leaning towards LA, even though Berkeley is only an hour's drive away. I think what sealed the deal was my major and focus. The alumni scholar was a nice addition too.

"basically, i feel i'll learn alot more discipline at cal than ucla, not just for academics, but for life in general. i want to pop my suburban bubble!"

Tinaaaw - I definitely agree with what you say. I've grown up in a boring bubble of a neighborhood in san diego, protected from basically everything (except wildfires!) that society can "harm" me with. I actually kind of forgot to put UCLA on my application list, but I got into Cal.

I actually decided to choose Cal over my other smaller choices (Brandeis and Kenyon) because it truly seems to offer a real world experience. Lots of people who will have different points of view, an interesting but troubled surrounding area, something always going on on Campus, etc. Plus tuition is truly a steal compared to Brandeis and Kenyon which didn't offer me a scholarship!

I'll be at Berkeley this fall, so my positive impressions of the place may change. My advice to anyone wishing to compare any colleges is just to visit them and see what the school offer ... especially to see if it "fits" you. Some will prefer UCLA to Cal and vice versa. Ironically, I would've gone to Brandeis if I hadn't visited both Cal and Brandeis to compare the two.

My son had the same decision to make, he chose UCLA because it is hundreds of miles closer to home, and he liked Westwood Village a lot more than the seedy area of Berkeley next to Cal. If you look at the statistics for the two schools side by side, they are extremely similar in selectivity.

ucla is better than cal....this has been decided....anyone that chooses berkeley of ucla is a loser....

now now. let's not make this (my) thread one of those spitting wars.

lol man im another one of those people torn in between the twoo

i really love LA, but it's just...Cal's prestige and top ranks are pulling me over to Cal as well..

WHAT TO DO?!?!? AWEFJAIWEJFOIWAEOIFWE

good job man...i congratulate you on your decision..smart thinking....

If you want to find parties at either school, you can. I'd call it a wash in this area.

pyro9891, go where you think you'd be happier and do better.

Questions I read that weren't really addressed but I am interested in hearing opinions on....

"so i guess it's just a matter of if i should go to somewhere i already love or somewhere thats different and exciting?"

"im considering either bio, environmental science, econ or business majors, would cal or LA be better for these?"

Thanks guys.

jewballer223,

Go where you feel happiest. Neither Cal nor UCLA will offer you anything radically and irreplaceably different at the undergrad level.

As for the majors, it doesn't/shouldn't matter. You can get a great education in any of those at both. UCLA doesn't offer business like Cal, but biz-econ has been making many UCLA undergrads a pretty penny for a long time.

Haha perfect.

Essentially what I am doing right now is making sure I am not overlooking any huge issues and creating problems down the line in choosing UCLA over Berkeley. Your answers have more than satisfied me, and I am very close to finally deciding on UCLA. Thank you UCLAri for everything.

I try. :)

Seriously, if you think you'll be happier at UCLA, go to UCLA. I know plenty of people who did it, and none of them regret it.
