I have these science goggles from high school. Would these be ok?

it depends. as long as they are actually goggles for lab, and not just glasses or regular goggles, they should be fine.
best way to find out is to go to lab and if the lab TA or the stockroom people call you out about it, then just borrow one from the stockroom for that day and purchase one.
if not, yay to saving $10!

^i won’t get penalized for that right?

shields/safety glasses:

are you sure you have goggles or shields?

i ask cause most high schools dont give the kids real goggles. if you have actual goggles, no one will hassle you. if you have the shields, the TA might hassle you (varies).

im assuming you are a freshmen taking the chem 1b or something. see if you have a friend you can share with. they buy apron, you buy goggles or something.

If you’re going to be taking more chem labs, I would suggest investing in your own apron and goggles

But yeah, if you actually have goggles that stay on your face you can wear those instead. The ones sold at school have this suction cup sort of thing… the point is for any spilled chemicals to not drip into your eyes. Of course, after 4 hours of lab it leaves a lovely goggle mark on your forehead! Most people just buy the ones sold at school so you don’t have to worry about looking nerdy though :P

Make sure they’re goggles and not glasses. You have to make sure that if any liquid spills on your face, that it doesn’t drip to your eyes. The glasses don’t prevent that. Make it easy on yourself and just buy it all at the bookstore. If you’re a bio major, it’s an investment.

not the first time, i think. just check if they are real goggles and if you’re insistent in using yours then just take it to lab and if you can’t, make sure you have an ID to borrow an item from the stockroom. no penalty for the first time.

Is the penalty a huge deal? like how much points or whatever? do they usually enforce it?

How many points is a penalty, I have no idea since I’ve never had to deal with that. I like to believe every point counts if you want an A, haha. (because basically everyone bombs the lab practical so the only thing that separates you guys apart in grades is your other points).

Do they enforce it? In the 3 labs I’ve taken…yeah. For sure. Safety is a big deal and the stockroom and TAs are pretty serious about their jobs for the most part. The stockroom can be pretty strict. Like if you forget your lab apron/goggles the second week of lab? No one is allowed to borrow from the stockroom and without your gear you are asked to skip lab for the week.

A few other examples of enforcement of safety and strictness: you can’t wear your lab gloves (fear of contamination) outside your lab. Period. They won’t serve you at the stockroom unless you go back into your lab and take them off. Once your 4 hours of lab are up, you are expected to be cleaned up and gone (some of the stockroom workers are really anal about this and will go to your lab to kick you out, even if your lab TA is willing to stay extra to let you finish).

Haha, so yeah…they’re pretty on the dot about everything.

If you insist on wearing lab glasses (not goggles) your TA will most likely notice even if you are discreet about it. There’s only about 15-20 people per class.
