I just got back from preview and i ended up with bio lab on monday and then bio lecture tuesday-friday. Is having the lab before the first lecture the first week a problem or is the lab completly autonomous from the lecture?

Labs usually begin the second week of school, so don't worry about the first week. Lab is not independent from lecture, usually, for bio I'm not sure how related they are, but your professor will probably cover material that you need for the lab beforehand, if you need it. According to one of my friends that is a biochem major, the chem labs can be done without lectures.

I have had a different experience than GatorEng with labs. I didn't feel like the topic taught in lecture were really required to know how to do the labs. Every lab has a book/manual which goes into detail about what the lab is about, so studying from that was all I needed. Even though I have those thoughts, different depts still require (sometimes) that you take the lab the same time as the class. Bio and organic I think are the exceptions because the labs get so full quickly.

wait so you don't have to take a lab the same semester as a class (ex: taking CHM2045 and then the lab (CHM2045L) another semester)?

Yes(*), for some lecture/labs, but you would need to email the dept or specific coordinator for the lab to find out the current policy.

*You don't have to take the class and lab at the same time for some.

Are labs like the chem labs a lot of work?

45: I thought it was easy.
46: More work involved because of unknowns and preparation beforehand. Work fast.
analytical: Hardest I feel, the class is easier though
orgo: More work since the lab meets twice a week for 2-3 hrs, but the labs are fun and the most enjoyable chem lab for me.

CHM2045L: This is a really easy lab. Most labs usually never take up the full 3 hours. Also, you work in groups of 3-4, and you have like 3 Lab Write Ups through out the whole semester.
CHM2046L: This lab is more work than 45L and you work by yourself on your own pace. You will most probably be there for the whole 3 hours for each lab since you want to get as much done as possible.
