DD is looking for an LAC that is NOT located in the boonies. 1900 SATS, 3.7 GPA, rigorous academic schedule, creative writing/envir. studies major. Would like to continue in musical theater, acapella, may play D-3 field hockey.. leaning away from preppy feel. No geographical limitations. Suggestions please?!

Amherst College
Barnard College
Bryn Mawr College
Claremont McKenna College
Hampshire College
Haverford College
Macalester College
Mount Holyoke College
Pomona college
Reed College
Rice University (not LAC, but close enough)
Smith College
Swarthmore College
University of Richmond
Wesleyan University

Thanks Alexandre,
How about schools a notch below these?

D2 really liked Illinois Wesleyan...just too far away from home for her.

I have to do some research and get back to you, but I am sure there are several.

Atlanta
Agnes Scot
Spelman

Boston
Simmons
Emmanuel
Lesley

Baltimore
Goucher

With 1900 you might want to remove Amherst Haverford Pomona Swarthmore Wesleyan. Maybe add Bucknell Holy Cross Trinity.

Muhlenberg College (near Lafayette and Lehigh)
Emmanuel College (in Boston)
Brandeis University - LAC-like
Suffolk University (in Boston) - LAC-like
Connecticut College

Cross-posted with icantfindaname: Don't add Bucknell. We took a look at it, and it's about as far in the boonies as one can imagine.

You are right about Bucknell, but people seem to love it (have a child at Williams so I guess I am partial to the "boonies").

Occidental

Thanks. I like the Occidental suggestion, a bit outside the New England area...any others? How about fairtest schools (one's that do not require SATS and that are near a city or are in a great college town.)

Also you might want to look at Skidmore.

The best SAT optional schools seem to be Bates, Bowdoin and Holy Cross

Muhlenberg is test optional, unless you're looking for merit scholarships.

conn college is also SAT optional (and has great enviromental science, writing, and a capella)

What about Franklin & Marshall? Lancaster is a nice town: with tourist attractions there are nice shops and restaurants. Also Stonehill is outside Boston. These 2 schools are def matches w your D's grades and SATs

Trinity, Union, Skidmore, Hobart.

Otterbein and Ohio Wesleyan just on the outskirts of Columbus. Denison great merit based FA and test optional I believe, just north of Columbus.

Pitzer is one of the Claremonts that might fit your criteria...the town of Claremont is more quaint than lively, but has some nice eateries & shops, plus its relatively close to LA. They are "quasi" test optional, and have an env studies program, definitely not preppy. The Claremont LAC consortium w/ >5000 students in total is pretty darned nice. D3, but sorry, no field hockey, but they have lacrosse.

Her field hockey interest may impose a geographical limitation you haven't anticipated. My perception is that field hockey is very much an east coast collegiate sport, not unlike lacrosse.

Two midwestern LACs not in the boonies but not already mentioned that might be good matches are Lake Forest just north of Chicago and Kalamazoo. Neither has a field hockey team, however, and Lake Forest is in a very tony Chicago suburb and might have a fairly high preppy quotient.
