Lafayette College goes no-loan for families making under $150,000 and eliminates CSS for some low income applicants

Our son is a freshman this year and loves Lafayette; it’s been a perfect fit for him so far. It’s a bit of a bummer that the no-loan change isn’t retroactive, but it’s a nice change to see for future students.

The cynic in me, however, sees this as a way to boost their application numbers thus reducing their acceptance rate and gaming the college rankings. It seems to have worked for Colgate where they had a huge number of applicants last year after announcing the elimination of loans as a part of the aid package.

To be fair, Colgate first enacted their no loan initiative for the incoming class of 2024 and announced it in the spring of 2019. TBH, it influenced D20 to apply ED. I think their big jump in the last cycle was helped by going TO.

We could use more of this type of cynicism! Eliminating loans is a great thing, and if the fact that it helped apps at Colgate so much gets other schools to eliminate loans, perfect!
