I am currently attending UGA and I have been told that Landscape Architecture is the right Major for me. I am very interested in "green" technology and sustainability. I would like to design/build structures such as homes, schools, buildings, etc. using green and sustainable methods. Do you believe this is the correct major for me? Thank you for any comments or suggestions.

Landscape architecture could be an appropriate major if you’re interested in sustainability.

If you primarily are interested in designing/building structures and buildings (e.g., homes, schools, etc.), however, then architecture would be more in line with that interest. As far I know, UGA does not offer an architecture degree.

An undergrad degree in architecture won’t qualify you for professional practice anyway so you’d need to get a M.Arch. degree. Can you do a pre-architecture program? You can check other schools to see what this consists of, ask your advisor, and check the website of M.Arch programs for their admission requirements. Usually, you’d need courses in general physics, calculus, some design studio courses, history of architecture, etc. I think you would get some of these courses in the landscape architecture major. I’m unsure, but it’s possible that a landscape architecture major could serve as an pre-architecture major.

Thanks for the comment. So does this sound like a good idea?: Get a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture at UGA, then go for my Master’s in Architecture. This way I would have the environmental planning background and the professional certification to build. Would my time in graduate school be shorter if I had LA as my Undergrad degree as opposed to something random like Economics, English, or Chemistry? Thank you.

I don’t know if it would shorten your time for an architecture degree since it’s a different field. It would provide background in sustainability, environmental planning, etc. and might give you some prerequisite or recommended courses to prepare for architecture (e.g., design studio/drawing). I haven’t checked the UGa landscape architecture program, but it would be a good idea to make sure it requires or allows you to fit in the prerequisites for entry to an architecture program, e.g, calculus, physics, architectural history. It seems like a somewhat indirect route to an architecture degree, but probably no more so than majoring in a liberal arts field, and it will provide an alternative field in case you change your mind about architecture and want to stick with landscape architecture or go for another field like planning. I would suggest checking admission requirements for several architecture programs that might interest you.
