I currently attend a six year high school program where my credits from seventh and eighth grade appear on my transcript and count for college. I took French II in seventh grade, French III in eighth grade, and French IV in ninth grade. This year, I am taking Latin I. If I don’t take any more language classes in high school, will colleges hold it against me for not continuing with Latin? Or will the fact that I took three years of another language make up for that. Thanks!
I think the fact that you started with French II is a good start, and you seem to have finished the sequence (unless you have French V or AP French, in which case I would recommend continuing). I also had 4 years of one language (Japanese) and one year of a related one (Mandarin) and the related single year wasn’t really noticed on my transcript
You could take French 5 or Ap (or take the AP test). Or Latin 1+2. Or Latin 1 just for fun (it wouldn’t change anything wrt college admissions).
Make sure you do have all core courses covered.
If I’m understanding, the portion of your transcript that shows 9-12, will reveal only two years of language, F4 and L1. Not truly competitive for top colleges that can eliminate kids based on stopping lang studies early.
Middle school may appear on your transcript, but they’re looking at 9-12. Nor is it enough that OP got to level 4 in 9th. (We ought to be consistent about this, across multiple threads.) This isn’t merely about reaching a highest level or claiming proficiency.
Once in college, some will let you test out of lang requirements. But this is about admissions.
OP asked about Ivies in another thread. Using Penn as an example:
“…we encourage you to consistently take classes in core academic areas (English, social studies, math, science, and foreign language) throughout your four years of high school.”
