I have to register for courses in about a week and I dont know what language i should do!
I dont like French, thats what I am taking now.
Im considering Japanese but just got an email from the school saying I should try Russian or German because of the attention I would get from teachers.
Anybody has past experience or just a little input?

I say you do German or Japanese. You wouldn’t really use Russian.

i like russian, my grandfather is fluent in russian and it sounds really cool, i hope to learn it in the future

What did they mean by the attention you would get from teachers? Is it because fewer kids take those languages so there is more individual attention?

I met the Japanese teacher and she is simply AWESOMESAUCE. Unfortunately, she’s taking a sabbatical next year, so people wouldn’t have her until upper year sob sob. The Japanese department is really small, and the classes (I sat in on one) were casual but really enriching. and everyone was so friendly!

gabii, you’re like, considering all the ones i am, LOL. language twin!! i’m in the same situation as you now, although am leaning towards german, mainly because russian and japanese are ridiculously hard =/ my dad said that russian would be really popular in the future, though, and i just LIKE japanese, so…D= but good luck! you aren’t alone in panicking (i thought i was the ONLY ONE having a crisis here, haha…been thinking about no other courses except languages every day >.<)

Neato, I think that’s what she meant. those language departments are pretty small.

language selection dilemma >.>
oh well i really want to take french…but then i’ve learnt spanish for two yrs now, dont wanna give that up :(

i think they offer an accelerated language course in your senior yr tho (three terms coverd in two terms), so u can pick a second/third foreign language before u head off to college.
that may be an option~

Yah ive been freaking out about this!
and I think more more individual attention is what she meant neato but Im not positive

Why would russian be popular in the future?

I still say you take German because **a)**it’s english related b)If you go to like Switzerland or something in that area you can speak to them! and c) when are you likely going t use the other languages? well, maybe japanese- but russian?

idk, but my dad says that the really powerful countries in the future are china, india, russia, and brazil (<— LOLWUT?). not sure where he learned this, but i trust him =B

OMGAH SWITZERLAND! COWS! ROLLING GREEN HILLS! SOUND OF MUSIC! sorry i spazzed out for a moment there, haha.

i’ve also been learning espanol for 2 years, but i haaaaate it. ME NO GUSTA ESPANOL. PERO ME GUSTA FREGAR Y LAS MANZANAS MALVADAS.

i do want to take that accelerated course, but i might also be taking one term of chinese lower year and i don’t want it to be too crowded. i also want to study abroad or take arabic xD

If you take German, you could go to Germany abroad for a term.

I think I am going to take Latin once I get into BS. It just has the most practical applications for me. It helps with the Verbal SAT and is helpful in the medical/scientific fields.

Yes, that’s true, but the same accounts for Russian and Japanese xD

I considered Latin but then discarded it since it was too boring, haha. Yes I’m a flights-of-fancy sort of person

Would getting a classical diploma impress colleges? I could fulfill the Latin portion but I don’t know if I should take some greek classes just to get the diploma.

it would, but only if you show true passion for it.

I have to self-study latin next year (my public hs doesn’t offer it) or I will be in Latin 1 as a sophomore and then I probably will not be able to get the diploma.

Plus you get to wear the cool green leaf wreath thing. haha

i have a quick question about languages. i have taken spanish for two years which is equal to a first year, but i dont learn all that 1st year spanish students do at the school i will be attending. if i have the choice should i retake spanish 1 or take latin? latin seems interesting, but knowing more spanish would be good.

Most schools have placement exams for languages. They will put you where you need to be.

As an old professor who took Greek and Latin over 40 years ago, I have to say I never found them useful. Memorize a few roots of words, but learn a living language.

latin and greek are wicked hard at the schools you’re thinking of applying to 2010.

Groton requires both a modern and ancient language if you come in as a second or third former. I am so glad I took both. Yea, Latin can be tough, but I aced my SAT verbal
(which many people say is directly related to taking Latin, who knows, it could be a myth)
