language house

i applied to a mandarin house but im not fluent in mandarin but i want to take mandarin all throughout college and eventually be fluent in it.

do you have to be fluent to live in a language house i took Chinese 1 this year so i got all excited when i saw the option now im worried that i will be stuck in a dorm full of people who speak only mandarin all the time

I’m currently in the mandarin house. you will have to be interviewed by someone and that person will determine if your chinese is good enough to join. it’s usually not that hard if you are truly interested. Note that if you get in, people still often speak english. you dont HAVE to speak in chinese but if you speak in mandarin, the other person will probably speak back in mandarin. it’s still a very good opportunity to practice. all you need to is get in!

I’m pretty sure they can speak English too.

i am also interested in this if i get accpeted as a transfer!! i my only problem with my mandarin skills is that i can not understand if peopel are speaking too fast to me. I can read very well though lol. can you still do the language house problem if you r a transfer first year student?

i dont think so, by the time you receive your transfer decision the language house decision would have came out already. i dont think they’d save you a spot when you aren’t even sure if you are in…
