Language Placement Test

I'll be taking the Spanish placement test online. Does anyone know what the test is like? How long is it? Is it as hard as an AP foreign language test?

Is this the test given by the department? If so, I took it a number of years ago. It is not as hard as an AP test (no aural section), nor is it very long at all–it was about twenty-thirty minutes of multiple choice questions/answers. It is basically a test of grammar/vocabulary. Brush up on the subjunctive.

language placement test online?
How to take it?

I’m sure whatever it is, it will accurately place you. They err on the side of moving you up rather than down from what I’ve heard from people who have taken it.

when I took the spanish placement test, I remember it was all reading comprehension, grammar and vocab. everything was MC, no writing, or listening. I agree with the statement that it tends to bump you up rather than down. I took four years of spanish in high school, but I never felt like I was very good at the language. I was surprised when I placed out of all four semesters of spanish. I think I did well simply because reading comprehension is a lot easier for me than writing…I doubt it’s as hard as the AP

I definitely recommend taking the placement test. I really wish I had…I just went with my SAT 2 spanish scores from October of my senior year…before I learned subjunctive, conditional, even future I think…I’m basically stuck in a class where I know most of the material already but it’s still not an easy A…I could have placed much higher if I took the UVA placement exam instead…

Is it possible for me to start a new language (Russian)? I took four years of French and I’m sick of it.

You can always start a new language but you have to weigh the prospect of taking 2 years of it against just 1 or 2 semesters of your other language. There’s a thread on this if you search that someone just asked about very recently.

This thread gives me much hope. I will be taking the Spanish Placement Exam tomorrow, but haven’t taken Spanish in a year. Thanks for the reassurance!

I only took Spanish up until my junior year, and I took the placement test today and got into the 2020 level. It wasn’t too hard, I’m sure you’ll do fine! :)

skipblue, thanks! You have been of great help!

I was just wondering, though, is the exam timed? I know that my parents require some attention in the next few days and the deadline is this Friday and I’ve been debating up until now whether or not to take it.

I don’t think there’s a time limit, but it does record how much time you took to complete it. It only took me about 25 minutes, and it says that on the report that I printed out after I finished the test.

If you’re concerned about being able to take time out of your schedule to do the exam, as long as you have 30-45 minutes of free time in your day you should be all clear. It won’t be a huge dent in your day :)

Alright, I took my exam, but I was asked about eighty questions, mostly consisting of long paragraphs. It took me 1 hr 30 min to take and I scored a 611. What does that mean?

It appears you have fulfilled the foreign language requirement for CLAS with your score.
