I was just wondering what the format of the language placement tests at Yale is, specifically for Spanish. Are there any samples of past administered placement tests that you can look on? And compared to the AP Language test is it harder or easier?

I took the Spanish placement exam this year. It had two sections of listening, with at least one of the sections requiring short answer (1-2 sentence) responses to questions. There was a lot of grammatical fill in the correctly spelled/conjugated noun/adjective/adverb/verb here. There were sentence responses using correct direct/indirect object pronouns. Towards the last 1/3, there were many passages with questions. I got so fatigued that I didn’t even bother with the last and hardest passage with 1-3 sentence responses (subsequently I placed into L4 which i still kick myself for; you need L5 to start a new language for only 2 semesters). There’s also two short essays.

Compared to AP language test, it’s definitely easier. But it’s pretty long with no breaks, hence my fatigue and epic fail (my only objective was L5 since I don’t intend to continue Spanish). Surprisingly though, my spanish AP test had virtually no subjunctive. I don’t remember what the placement test did with the subjunctive.

Remi10001, when do you take the Language Placement Test?

^ You take placement tests during Freshman Orientation. I’m planning on taking the French and Spanish placement test. I’m a native speaker of Spanish and want to take a Spanish class but I have to take a placement test for it. So, I’ll see how it goes. It’s kind of a bummer to know that the placement tests are so long without breaks. Not really looking forward to that…
