S is a college student whose schedule probably won't allow him to study abroad during the school year. He will not need units or any sort of college credit, but would like to spend a summer (or part of a summer) studying Spanish and staying with a family in Spain. Suggestions? Thanks!

S had incredibly positive experience studying two weeks at Lacunza language school in San Sebastian last summer, with homestay in a beautiful house with large extended family who spoiled him rotten. San Sebastian is Basque region, an elegant small city with three beaches, very safe and, most importantly for us, mild summer climate. Whatever you do, make sure any language school you choose is 'Cervantes Institute accredited." There are many very poor quality schools out there, as I’ve learned to my cost…

This looks like a wonderful language school, thanks! When I go onto their website, though, it appears that they have programs for high school students and for older adults studying Spanish for business, but I don’t see college students represented. Did your son attend when he was in college, and were there other students his age?

Check if Middlebury has a summer session. D did semester abroad through them and she lived with a family.

Middlebury has amazing summer language immersion programs. I think you have to spend some time on campus before going abroad.

S. as a highschool student, enrolled in one of the ‘youth’ courses for teenagers but all the other courses were aimed at adults over 18 and many of these were college students (except for those in the specialized classes aimed at business people and teachers).

D did a wonderful Spanish home-stay total immersion program through Rhodes at Instituto Sampere in Madrid and Salmanca. Her’s was a Maymester (about 6 weeks I think) I’d avoid the tuition $ if he didn’t need the credit (she did) if that’s possible. Here’s a link to the Institute. http://www.sampere.es/ Her program had Rhodes prof’s and locals so …YMMV. She loved it and both locations had kids from all over the world. Truly wonderful experience but with tuition NOT cheap.

I can’t tell you how many memories she made.

Thanks so much for the info. It sounds as if there are several really excellent programs to look into.

DD didn’t have to stay on campus at all when she did the Middlebury program.
