Language Requirement in CAS?

According to the summary of requirements for CAS, the foreign language requirement consist of: completion of one course at the nonintroductory level or above (Option 1) or at least 11 credits in one language (Option 2).

It later states that this requirement may be fulfilled in one of two ways:

Option 1: Passing (a) a nonintroductory foreign language course of 3 or more credits at Cornell at the 2000 level or above or (b) any other nonintroductory course at the 2000 level or above conducted in a foreign language at Cornell. OR

Option 2: Passing at least 11 credits of study in a single foreign language (taken in the appropriate sequence) at Cornell.

Then, in terms of placement, it states that entering students may be placed by exam into a nonintroductory level course, either using the SAT II, AP score of 4 or 5, or the LP test... "Being placed by examination into the first course at a nonintroductory level does not earn credit toward the degree. Degree credit is earned only for demonstrated mastery of work equivalent to the first course at an intermediate level at Cornell and placement into the second intermediate course. "

^ That is where my confusion begins. I understand Option 1 and 2, however, I don't understand how placement works, or how gaining credit works after placement. Do I have the option of taking either of the exams? I haven't taken an AP language course, however, I've earned 7 years of high school credit in Spanish, and taken the IB SL Spanish Exam. So, I was contemplating signing up for the June SAT II's and taking Spanish. However, were I to do this, what score would be satisfactory to be placed into a nonintroductory course?

Also, when they state that being placed by examination into a course doesn't earn credit towards the degree, does this mean that 1) I will not gain credit for the course I am placed into, or 2) I will not gain credit for the courses I'm skipping over? (I know 2 makes more sense.. but it's still confusing wording o_O)

Additionally, would it be wise to try and gain placement into an intermediate Spanish course? I've also contemplated starting with a completely new language, for instance, I've always wanted to learn Sanskrit.. (even though this would virtually be of little to no practical use..) Or, perhaps FALCON. Were I to complete FALCON, would this fulfill all of my foreign language requirements? and, would I be able to start as an ABSOLUTE beginner?

Also, say I were to take a placement exam (LP test) for Spanish, however, ultimately decided to start a-new with another foreign language, would it hurt me? Or, could I only benefit from taking it?

I have no idea what an appropriate path to take would be D= I'd greatly appreciate advice from an experienced veteran =D

Courses of Study 2009-2010: College of Arts and Sciences

nvm about FALCON…

I didn’t understand before that it was a full year of ONLY language.

I’m pretty sure #2 is correct. So if, for example, you skip over Spanish 101, you can’t get credit for 101 but you will get credit for the intermediate course you are taking at Cornell.
