I’m a high school senior who’s applying to Bowdoin (along with a couple other LACs). How strong are the foreign language programs at Bowdoin? I know that Middlebury is particularly prestigious for its language instruction (I’m applying there also), but I was wondering if Bowdoin still offered strong programs which could help me become fluent (probably in Japanese or Chinese). Thank you in advance for any answers!

If we are talking about LACs with really strong foreign language programs, Middlebury is incredible with everyone else far behind. That being said, Bowdoin has a solid foreign language program with French, Spanish, and Italian being the most popular languages. The Japanese/Chinese classes here are great; they are a LOT of work and daily effort/time, but you will be amazed how much you learn after only a semester. Most of the students who take these languages are interested in the Asian Studies major.

Thanks so much for the advice! I know how prestigious Middlebury language programs are, but figured that Bowdoin’s would also be strong. I figured I would ask just to make sure :)
