French at Bowdoin

I’d like to hear from Bowdoin students/parents about experiences with the French Department and professors. Also interested in experiences with study abroad in French, either in France or Africa. Is the department strong, not just in language but in French literature? Thanks!

department is really strong, i think it’s the second most popular romance language. my fav. professor from bowdoin is a french professor. A lot of language majors are double major (I am history and french) but you don’t have to be. You can also be a romance languages major (be good at both french and spanish and also take italian- or something like that)

lots of people study abroad, and i plan to. i think it’s more than half the students (sometimes its 60% sometimes its lower). you can choose from tons of programs…there are hundreds to choose from, and there’s a whole office with people whose job it is to help you choose the right program. kind of spoiled! you can also read comments from other students who have done it before.

so far i’ve taken a class where we did camus, sartre, baudelaire (if you’re into poetry) and it was tons of fun. i think i might choose between the JYF or middleburys study abroad program but i doubt i will find a teacher that i like as much!
