Languages

So how are languages at Duke? How are they curved? Are they written or oral? Memorization or comprehension? Reccomend exempting the first semester or 2 or taking all 3 years?

Obviously this varies from dept. to dept.

like spanish, for example

What level of Spanish? Like intro classes, intermediate, or 100+?

does anyone know what score you need on the SATII Spanish to place out of beginner courses? I heard somewhere if you get above a certain score, you only have to take one semester of foreign language?

ninjaturtle: you need at least a 660 on the SAT II to place into a 100-level class which means you only have to take one semester. You can also get a 6 or 7 on the IB HL test or a 4/5 on AP lit.

What if you didn't take the SATII or any sort of test but you took spanish for 3 years in high school? Is there some sort of proficiency test to take at Duke itself that will place me in a course?

ok awesome, thx gcards1

Enteril... I'm not really sure, but you wouldn't be able to start in Spanish 1 (I know that for sure). Perhaps starting in Spanish 63 (third semester equivalent) would be what you would do if you are pretty good.

Hmm...that wouldn't get me out of taking any semesters for my foreign language requirements though, right? If not, I might as well just start a different language at an introductory level.

I remember there being a language proficiency exam the first week or so of freshman year. I didn't take it, but I think some of my friends did.

well if you were doing chinese, you'd need to take a placement test regardless. That's how I ended up in 170 when I wanted 35...go figure...

If I have above a 660 or whatever on the SAT 2 but only a 3 on the AP language test (they want a 4 to place you in the 100s, I believe), can I still get into the 100 level or do I need to take a placement test? I've taken a college course at the state school in French, by the way.

For Spanish 63, how is it anyone who has taken it? Is it memorization of grammar and vocabulary, or is it writing and orals? Is it curved to a certain grade?

I think you just have to satisfy one of the requirements for 100-level class, either SAT or AP.
