Laptop Lectures

You always see in college movies that a ton of students use their laptops to take notes during lectures. Is this true? Do a lot of students use their laptops at berkeley? The desks seem kinda small, I don't know how you would fit them on it.

I can type faster than I can hand write, so i would like to use my notebook, but not if no one else is doing it.

Thanks

Man, you shouldn't be so willing to conform!?

i say do whichever one is easier for you. it doesn't matter what the other ppl are doing. we're in college now, its not high school anymore and nobody's gonna point and laugh at you because you're the only one using a laptop (at least i hope that the people are mature enough) :)

haha. I really didn't mean it like that. The question was more geared toward the "do people use laptops in lectures", i was joking about the whole "I'm afraid to do it if no one else is"

Yes. Yes.

Yes. But it's more for like screwing around than taking notes. I swear I always see a MySpace or Facebook or insert yoru favorite cesspool website on most laptop screens rather than notes.

I wouldn't say a lot of students. Even in my larger, non-math/science classes (where notetaking on a laptop would be easiest) I'd say there was still only maybe a couple dozen students using a laptop for notes. In courses like math/science/engineering where you have to write equations, very few people take notes with laptops.

Wow, I think I can write faster than I type...maybe. I don't know I've never really thought about it.

Computer notes just seem so impersonal....

But yes, depending on the class, tons of people bring notebooks to class.

You can also record the lecture with the laptop.

I think almost everyone types faster than they write, as long as they have some level of proficiency on the keyboard.

In my philosophy class last semester (at community college), there were these two kids who always sat in the back with their laptops, and they were the only ones to have them. Everyone called them the Laptop Brothers. Apparently, they took all their classes together and always sat in the back with their laptops. One time, I saw them in the bathroom together using two urinals right next to each other. Weird.

So anyway, the Laptop Brothers were a little out of it. They didn't understand where and how they fit into the rich tapestry of college society. Every time I walked by them, they would sneer at me. I have no idea why; I was never mean to them or anything. I think they thought that they were cool enough to be mean to people. One time they were leaving in their little Toyota Corolla and I saw them smirking at me. So, finally, towards the end of the semester, I got a little fed up. They walked by with their stupid little sideways glances, and I said "Hey!," but they kept on walking. I knew they heard me. So then I yelled, "you know, I'M the one who should be smirking, NOT YOU... LAPTOP BROTHERS!!" I never saw them again. They just slinked in on the last day of class and took the final and then made a discreet exit.

The point of my story is this: if you want to bring your laptop to class, fine. Just don't be a complete weirdo, and no one will have a problem with you.

Haha, nice story. It's not typical for kids to bring their laptops to community college, but I'm sure more people do it at Cal.

ha ha. I hope I am more social than the infamous Laptop Brothers
