laptop use?

How often do you bring your laptop to class?

Almost never. I only bring it if it’s a really boring useless lecture that I know I’m not going to pay attention to, but for whatever reason want to go to the lecture anyways.

There was only one class that I actually brought my laptop to in all my 3 years so far. There are some classes where as Bootes said that you might get bored and want it for other reasons…but some classes have lots of notes and it is just easier to type them. Generally though a majority of the students do not bring their computers to class.

I’d imagine for lecture classes, it might be useful to have a laptop to take notes on – definitely faster than trying to write everything. I don’t know why, but I don’t mind typing at all … but I absolutely hate having to write stuff by hand.

Definitely don’t get a huge, heavy, and super-expensive laptop. I’ve heard from quite a few people that netbooks are the way to go (unless you aren’t bringing a desktop, at which point a netbook won’t be good enough).

markopolo - I don’t suggest bringing a desktop. Takes up too much room, and very few people bring one. You’ll have other things to occupy the space on your desk. Instead, bring a reasonably sized/priced laptop (15.4 in is IDEAL I think for both homework/movies/whatever the function). And depending on the type of person, a laptop may be too distracting if you’re the serious student who wants to pay attention. But for the most part, they’re not used too often in classes and some professors actually make a point in not allowing them.

since we are already on this topic, what is the best brand to have on campus? (Toshiba, Dell, Mac)

techno - I think that depends on your personal taste. I know a bunch of mac users, but I personally hate macs and think they’re hard to use. I know a lot of people with dells though, and I haven’t heard any complaints about them, and I myself own an inspiron 1525 dell that I purchased last summer, and I love it <3.

I have used both (started with a PC and have a Mac now). They both work fine with the Binghamton network. If you are planning on being an art or cinema major, I suggest a mac as that is the best type of computer to work with the programs. I am an art major with a graphics concentration so I need the Mac to do all my assignments on. Just a thought…
