Do people usually bring their laptops around or do they just leave it in their rooms? Also, do people get their laptops stolen often? I heard that at some schools you can track your laptop with some device the security people put on it.

I always intended to solely bring my laptop, and leave my desktop at home. In the name of security, I was going to bring it with me every where. Other than that, I have no idea but would like to know the same.

A lot of people bring their laptops to lecture to take notes in them. It's not required, but it's a lot faster to type than to write in a notebook. I highly recommend them if you're taking a class in which the instructor only provides notes orally.

Having a laptop stolen isn't uncommon here at Binghamton. Although, if you practice some common sense, you'll be fine. Those who tend to get theirs stolen don't lock their dorm room doors. ALWAYS LOCK YOUR DOORS, and check to ensure that it is locked before leaving your dorm. Also, if you study in the library, NEVER LEAVE YOUR BELONGINGS UNATTENDED. If you need to use the bathroom, take all your stuff with you. Still, despite these warnings, I still see many people leaving their belongings unattended for hours at times in the quiet study rooms.

Finally, Bing does not have that laptop security device program, although I wish it did. Just remember, people DO steal here.

Yup, a lot of people bring their laptops to lecture with them. In smaller classes and discussion sections, laptops are less common.

Laptops do get stolen, but as demonfireangel said, if you use some common sense, you should be alright. Don't leave your laptop alone, even just for five minutes, even if you think it will be fine. I had a friend who left his laptop alone in the common room of his suite and went into his bedroom to answer his phone. When he came out 10 minutes later, the laptop had been stolen, and the police weren't able to recover it.
