Laptop vs. Tablet

I have heard a lot of people tell me to buy a tablet instead of a laptop for college this fall. Any opinions on this? And any ideas on what tablet or laptop to choose?

Well it depends. What are you going to use it for. Can the tablet you pick be able to take notes, write papers, surf the web and is it easy to use. Laptops are able to do more but are a little more to lug around. It just depends. Some people will get a tablet for class and a cheap desktop or laptop to be able to keep at their dorm. Just depends shop around and ask questions at like best buy.

Laptop is a must unless you cannot afford one.

Currently, a tablet is like an accessory.

aStyle hit it right on the head. Tablets, though fun and really convenient for web browsing, email, etc, are getting alot of buzz right now, they can’t be depended on totally for doing actual work. I own an iPad and I love it for its entertainment value, but it can’t hold a candle to a full laptop. You can write essays, read textbooks (if available in ebook format), and a whole list of other school related tasks on the iPad, but when it comes down to it the iPad is still not a main computer type of device (not yet at least.) Alot of people with tablet like needs go for full laptops with tablet capabilities (touch screen, swivel display, etc) and are really happy with the outcome. There’s a few other threads on this board about this very topic, may go back a little while, but they are still worth a read.

jwhite, do you mean a tablet PC or just tablet? I dont think an ipad is good enough for college.

I had a tablet PC for four years of high school. For college, I didn’t get one- plain and simple, the problems just aren’t worth it.
