Laptop with financial aid?

Ok, so I need a new laptop for next year. (I have one now but it's pretty much on its death bed).

Has anyone purchased a laptop through financial aid at UMich before? I'm just curious how I would go about doing it.

I already emailed finaid, and they said "When you get to campus you can stop by the financial aid office to inquire about how to increase your budget to reflect computer cost." I emailed back and they never responded.

Does that mean I have to wait until I start classes to adjust it? That doesn't seem to make sense if I need the laptop FOR school.

I'm on break next week so I wanted to know if I should drive to Ann Arbor and figure things out in the office while I have time?

Phone them and ask them to explain the options available to you. You will want to note that including in your COA does not necessarily mean they will actually give you ANY MORE FINAID for it, but it will make you eligible to have parents take a Plus loan to cover it. Frankly, you’d be better off just saving up over the summer for it and paying cash, but you never know – perhaps in your case adding it MAY increase aid to you. Just don’t expect it to.
