hello! does anyone have any idea what kinda laptop we will be getting?
I know there was an earlier discussion on this but can't seem to find it.
Someone asked this question during CW as well but I couldn't hear the answer (also, I thought:"well let me get IN first then think about the laptop!")

According to one of the Olin students at CW, the laptop will be a Dell Latitude D630.

Unfortunately, I don't think we get them until the first day of orientation =(

Technically, they give you the laptops on the last day of orientation. This is to promote class bonding during all of orientation week. It works pretty well; you notice there being less people about when laptops are issued.

I was looking up some customer reviews for the D630, and although it seems to be a great machine for all technical purposes, there seemed to be a lot of complaints about its sound system and speakers. I love listening to music and good quality speakers are fairly important to me if I'm paying such a steep price....could any of the students that already have the same or similar laptops comment on that? Thanks!

In my experience, any laptop you buy is going to have crappy speakers. I have one of the junior laptops, a D610, and they are perfectly fine for listening to music or watching movies. If good quality speakers are important to you, you should buy some. I hate to break it to you, but you have absolutely no choice on the hardware configuration. :) The laptops are meant to be workhorses more than anything else; most likely, you're going to have it for four years and get used to the quirks that come with it. IT will fix everything else.

Many have external speakers so that the sound is better.
Maybe ask for some for graduation?

I really like my external speakers. They were (relatively cheap) at around $100 and are very good. The subwoofer is like a cubic foot and it gets pretty loud.

Just curious, does Olin's deal with Dell include reduced prices on some Dell accessories?

I plan on getting a docking station for my D630 (the D/Port and D/View)... it seems like a really convenient alternative than having to replug all those wires in. But at CW, I don't think I saw anyone with a docking station...

I know my roommate had one last semester, and she got hers off of eBay. Dell does have better prices on some accessories, such as batteries, but I'm not sure about docks. Most people at Olin tend to be cheaper than they are lazy, but maybe that's just me. :) I definitely would like to stress that you shouldn't buy anything like a dock until you actually get the laptop; there'll be plenty of time before you are ridiculously sick of plugging in wires, you don't want to get the wrong thing, and you can't even get any discount there might be until you get your e-mail address.

I use a docking station. Got it off ebay.

Is this the school where everyone goes for free?

/\ WOW... thats a nice way of putting it... hmph /
