Wondering what is typical. My son prefers PC over Mac - he is planning to major in sport and event mgmt - will a PC laptop be ok? I looked at the Class of 2016 FB page and saw many references to Macs, which made me wonder.

Do most students bring their own printer? Or do they tend to print at the library or copy center?

Looking at the Elon website - they seem to encourage purchasing either a Dell product or an Apple laptop through an Elon affiliated purchasing program so that you get an Elon-configured laptop and can get it serviced at Elon.

Is that what most people do?

Get the PC unless the school says he really needs a Mac for that major but price the Dell vs. local or internet store. Include price of software the campus program provides in your comparison. Is the on-campus support worth it? The school will hint at all sorts of disasters if you don’t but many (most) kids get by just fine on their own. If your son has an apptitude for maintaining his system (or has a buddy who will play sys admin and IT help desk for him) and treats his personal electronics well, he may be fine on his own. The support contract has worked out OK for my son at his school but I am still unsure 3+ years later if it was worth the extra $$. Keep in mind the PC will be obsolecent by the time he graduates. D opted for a Mac at her school last year and her on-campus deal with software was at a price I could not match on-line or with any discount program I could access.

My son has a mac and likes it but he said many kids have a pc too. I think our reasoning for getting a mac at the time was that kids in communications mostly used macs but he did not go in that direction so it ended up not mattering.
