Laptops and such.

Hey there! I just bought a laptop for college a few days ago (thanks to that amazing $750 off $1499 Dell coupon, heheh) and I was just wondering about what I should do to make sure it stays in my posession. Should I get some sort of lock or do I not need to worry if it's in my dorm room? How about other things like digital cameras and cell phones?

Get a cable lock for your laptop at least 5 feet long so you can loop it through the corner of your bedpost while keeping it on your desk. Thefts are rare in the dorms, but when they do occur the laptop is always stolen. Get a cell phone - they're important at UCLA, not just for socializing but for emergencies too. Digital cameras, not so much. Chances are, one of your friends has one and you can borrow his/hers.

laptop locks are very easy to circumvent (most of them anyway), so the best thing for you to do is to make sure you keep an eye on your laptop, or make sure it is on your desk and that your room is locked when you're not in it.

Is there something similar to AirBear?

AirBear? you mean wireless networking? if so, i found this:
<a href="http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/wireless/coverage/%5B/url%5D">http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/wireless/coverage/</a></p>

Aww.. it's not available anywhere... it looks like it's restricted to the buildings (and even certain floors/rooms).. and none in the residential area at the moment.

You serious? When I went on tour they said that the entirecampus had WiFi coverage.

maybe you misheard :)
they should have said "we will have the entire campus covered soon"

Can we get along without a laptop? are the college comps. located near the bldgs. we r going to stay in; I just don't want to put additional burden on my parents.
What stuff is totally required to live on-campus?
Cell phone, comp., fridge, tv, (PS 2), ............? What do we NEED? and what can we live without?

i dont think a laptop would be completely necessary. you can borrow one (or rent one? forgot if you have to pay or not) if you really need one for something.

no seriously that's just lame. the dorms are STILL in development? gosh i hope thats a dated map. and i hope ppl who go there prolly dont need to use internet as much either since theres stuff to do around.

of course you can get by without a laptop
