laptops...security?

I'm getting a new laptop for graduation and I'm really excited, only my Dad is freaking out telling me it WILL get stolen.

Is he right? Can you leave your dorm room open for a second and come back with your stuff all still there? How careful do you have to be?

Depends where you live... but for the most part the dorms are pretty save. Laptops do get stolen, but if you arent dumb (buy a laptop lock!) and dont leave it in public you should be fine...

Buy one of them new-fangled locks (for the laptop that is.)

Also, always close and lock your door in the dorm when leaving, and don't leave you backpack with your computer in it laying around.

yeah, as long as you use common sense, you'll keep your laptop. But if you leave your door open while you go to the bathroom (esp. if you think the hall is empty), it might walk away. If you leave it sitting on a library table while you hunt down a book or two, it will probably walk away. But if you close your door, if you take it with you, if you're reasonably careful, you'll be fine.

Be sure to back up your files periodically to cd/dvd and store them somewhere other than your laptop bag or backpack, just in case.

the dorms are pretty safe, but I'd use common sense. Always lock your door when you leave and if you have something expensive buy a lock (they have specialized laptop locks that are not that expensive)

no ones going to come into your dorm with a hacksaw and bolt cutters, you're just trying to prevent someone from opening the door and grabbing the laptop in one motion.

I used to use my laptop lock, but I stopped a quarter of the way through the year. I always kept it out and sometimes I would leave the room for hours at a time with the door wide open (I'd be in other rooms in the hallway). No one ever stole anything and I had stuff like my ipod, graphing calculator, etc always in the open. I guess you could call me lucky :P

2+2=5. When you play russian roulette ... it's only a matter of time. Consider using some common sense precautions.

Yeah yeah I know....I lived in a small hallway that was always empty anyway. Next semester I'm in Webb so I can leave my stuff laying around all i want hahaha :D
