I'm an international student and will be attending IU this fall as an undergrad for finance.....

Is it advisable to buy a laptop there in Bloomington itself in case they offer extra services and/or insurance to local buyers instead of the standard universal guarantee I get if I but it outside of the US?

Are there suitable shops there in the first place?

Any particular brand/processor one should stick too?

I would imagine that if you buy your computer somewhere near Bloomington (either in Bloomington or up in Indianapolis) you might be able to find a place that would offer you a free loaner if you had to turn your computer in for repairs during the warranty period. That would be the only real advantage I can think of.

As far as machines, I don't think one particular model is recommended.

Here is a link to the computer shop at IU. I don't know how these prices compare to other places, but you might be able to order it and pick it up when you get there, if you wanted to do that.

you are entitled to the IU student discount once you have your ID number. Apple stores honor the IU discount (I think its approx $200 depending on what you order..) It all explained on the UITS.iu.edu website. some windows software is free for students..like the office suite..other software like photoshop etc. is sold a greatly reduced prices. so definitely look at the uits site before buying anything..
