Would appreciated if any current Emory student can provide insight to the size of the freshman core science and humanity classes and how the are taught:

1) Are all classes taught my professors? I heard some number like 94% taught by professors. At some larger state schools that we visited, we were told even the larger lecture classes are taught by professors with TA helping the students in labs or lead smaller group discussions. Is this how Emory classes are structure?

2) How big are those classes?

Thanks for your help.

Since we have a more relaxed core than some schools, it is difficult to answer your questions. I will answer the more general ones first. Most classes are taught by professors. For example, in three years I have had only one course taught by a graduate student (she was very good too). The class counted as a GER but it was in the Interdisciplinary Studies department and had about 15 people.

1) The “big” classes are generally the premed classes (bio 141/2, chem 141/2, and phys 141/2) and some other popular courses like intro to psychology or econ. They are all taught by professors and have numerous TAs to help answer questions and lead study groups.

2) The size varies but I think the biggest classes are around 80 - 120 people. There are very few this size so it’s not a problem and you can easily avoid them. Every class I’ve had for the past two years has been 12-15 people.
